question about how often you see your surgeon post-op

Recommended Posts

I'm just curious how many people actually see their surgeon post-op. I have not seen mine since surgery and I wondered if this was normal. I haven't had any problems at all, so it isn't that, but sometimes I wonder if I am supposed to have a follow-up appt with him so he can check my progress or whatever. I have had 4 fills, but I go to an after care center for that. The only people I see are the nurses who check vitals and weigh in and the tech who actually does the fill.

Anyway, just curious. It's been 3 months. I was wondering if I should initiate this myself? Or what the standard 'check in' with your doc might be. Or if it is even necessary if you aren't having any problems??

My surgeon is very hands on. I have yet to have a nurse do my fills. I like that.

I saw my doctor every 4-6 weeks post up for the past 18 mos...(actually Physician Assistants--but that was fine with me)

I got my first fill ever on Tuesday. My new doc since my old one left the practice is very hands-on and did my first fill. I have to go back in 6-8 weeks.

He checked me at four weeks post op and it's been the NP ever since for fills.

My program called for 11 visits with the surgeon in the first year (one week, four weeks, five weeks then as needed). A six month and twelve month check in with LB coordinator at the hospital. Surgeon does the fills but I would feel fine with a nurse practitioner, etc.

I too go to an after care center. They do all my fills etc. If any problems develop they will contact the surgeon. Good question and ever seeing the surgeon again. Best wishes as you continue your new journey!!

I have only seen my surgeon once since my surgery in October. He did one of my fills. Other than that it has been the np and I am fine with that

I had a follow up after surgery...I think it was two weeks. And then he likes me to go in once a month for the first year.

My doctor has also been the only one who has done my fills.

Make it a regular thing. No matter how well or poorly you think you are doing.. please please see your doc regularly. .

I saw the surgeon one week after surgery and then the nurse practitioner for 3 fills. After that my insurance required I see the doctor for fills. I have no idea why this is. It seems wasteful to have to take the dr 's time up just for a fill. But I always felt that if there were issues I could see the surgeon. The NP and MDs are in the same office.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
