Problems since surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi my name is Robin! I had Lapband surgery April 5,2007. For 1 week everything was okay, however I was not eating just drinking. Then my husband and I went out to eat ,I ordered cream Soup and immediatly started throwing up. This continued and my doctors office tried several different things, including totally making sure the band had no air or fluid. Also I need to mention I had a Hiatel Hernia repaired at the time of surgery. My doctor felt like my esophagus was swollen so he started me on a dose pak of steroids I thought that was helping. The Monday after I started the meds I woke up very sick throwing up and severe diarrhea, nothing stayed down for one whole week. I went to my family doctor and I was suffering from severe dehydration, and he was a little unsure of treating me he wanted me to go back to my surgeon. He called my surgeon and he agreed to see me the next day at 2:00. When I saw him he just wanted to make sure I knew what he had done was not causing these problems. He finally did agree to give me a bag of fluids, neither doctor could pick up a blood pressure.I'm a little better, I usually only throw up once a day. This week I started a new sympton swelling I called my surgeon again he let me know it was'nt the Lapband. My family doctor precribed a diuretic. The swelling is much better. Can anyone relate? Please help if you can.

Princessrobin, I am SO sorry you're going through this. It must be so scary for you and even more so because your surgeon won't look into because he's convinced it's not the band AND your pcp isn't really doing much BECAUSE of the lapband. I wish I had advice for you. I hope some of our forum nurses and docs can shed some light for you.

I wish we knew what makes us swell and why some of us are to tight to eat Breakfast, Soup for lunch and then can get something down for dinner. I swell after every single fill almost. My bp meds have a diuretic in them and that does not seem to make any difference with me. My doc has me swigging 2 teas of carafate suspension before meals and at bedtime if I have swelling.

If you all know what causes the swelling then post it for sure!!!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
