When is Hot Sauce ok to have post surgery?

Recommended Posts

I was told to avoid hot spicy things at my 1 week post op. I'm now almost 3 weeks post op. When is hot sauce ok? Like adding red hot to refried Beans?

Why do we have to avoid it?

Thank you for the help. I will be asking my surgeon/nutritionist next visit but that is a week away still.

I was told by my surgeons to consider my sleeve as a baby's tummy. Would we give a baby hot sauce? Or would we already know that those types of spices would cause our baby some type of stomach discomfort?

My program is very conservative compared to some others I've read on boards. They are very concerned about acid, ulcers, reflux, not to mention the nutritional value of the food we put in our bodies. So I'm told no to spicy food for the first year or possibly indefinitely. And my favorite food is Indian...sigh.

I am a little over 7 weeks out.. I have been adding spices like chipotle powder and chili powder to foods.. my NUT told me that it was ok after I hit the 6 week mark.

I haven't actually added hot sauce.. yet.. I have had some pretty nasty reflux and didn't want to make it worse with that...

I have used a medium heat salsa in a chicken dish.

I began adding hot sauce about two weeks post-op without problem. Each surgeon has their specific phases to get you back to 'regular foods.' The foods in every phase are "as tolerated."

If your surgeon has cleared you to have a particular food, but the food doesn't agree with your new sleeve, then give it a few weeks. Most people find their tolerance improves weekly after surgery, but your mileage may vary.

Listen to your doctor and listen to your tummy!

I am not a hot sauce fan, but I do use mustard and med salsa. Probably started around 3 weeks or so. Can't quite remember?

The best is to follow docs orders, and just be careful, little at a time. Your new tummy will definitely let you know what it likes and what it doesn't.

Yes, definitely if anything doesn't agree with the stomach, then we will obviously not eat that.

However, I think hot sauce will taste great and go down very easy. I was just wondering why the doctor wanted to stay away from spicy things and acidic things right now. I don't think they can cause ulcers.

I didn't really know the reasoning. Thats why I was asking. I'm hoping the doctors give me the go ahead next week. We will see when I ask. I will also ask the reasoning too.

Thanks so much.

Mine told me that too much spice can cause reflux issues... but your mileage may vary...

I'm not a "spicey" or "hot" fan, but I have always liked Frank's Hot Sauce. It's not really "hot" to me, but it gives a lot of foods a little extra flavor. I have been using it since I have been able to eat eggs at 3 weeks post op, and I haven't had any problems at all.

At 4 weeks out, I was able to eat Indian food with no problem.

@@monopoly2015 I was allowed to have hot sauce once I advanced to purees (for me that was at four weeks out), and one of the first things I had was refried Beans with hot sauce. I also did pureed tuna with hot sauce and poached egg drenched in hot sauce. It never gave me any trouble. I do have a sleeve of steel though, just like before my surgery I had a stomach of steel. No food ever bothers me. I am pretty sure I could live on a diet of old t shirts and tin cans B)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
