Calcium...getting it from milk is enough?

Recommended Posts

Question for everyone

I have milk (about 6 oz) and about 100 gm of cottage cheese everyday. Should I be taking Calcium supplements?

Currently I'm taking:

1 Centrum Multivitamin

B12

Vit D

Iron (due to low levels)

Any suggestions/advice? I got sleeved in Mexico and they only said to take Centrum and B12 daily, that's it.

I think the correct answer to your question depends partly on your age. See http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Calcium-Consumer/

Three daily servings of dairy foods is a good goal. However, not everyone tolerates dairy products well. Happily, dairy is not the only source of Calcium. See http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/features/10-calcium-rich-foods and other sites re these foods.

Protein drinks that most of us drink early on post-op and even later on have lots of calcium added, too.

If you were to track your food on My Fitness Pal (or other online trackers) you can track your calcium intake and compare that to your personal daily requirements.

What do your surgical guidelines say? My dr's office wants my to take 1500 mgs of calcium citrate a day. I use a supplement to help get me there.

Didn't get any surgical guidelines.

Yes, I still have a Protein shake made with milk everyday and forgot that I also have cheese daily lol I do use MFP but only for tracking weight loss. I've had a complete blood work done at 6 months and everything was fine, but I see posts on calcium citrate and people taking calcium chews and etc. which got me thinking if I was getting enough or not.

I guess I should start tracking food. Thanks for the link!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
