Have a date! Are second thoughts normal?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I got approved by my insurance company earlier this week and am scheduled for surgery on February 16. Yesterday, I had my pre-op appointment with my PCP. Everything was fine and he cleared me for surgery. I have been so excited and felt as though I was mentally ready. All of a sudden, I am so nervous - not abut the surgery itself but about being able to do what I have to long term. I see a therapist every week and we are working on this. However, all I can think about right now is al the food that I will never be able to eat again. Is this normal? Any advice?

Thanks!

Everyone goes through a fear of the unknown several times before and after WLS. This is very normal. All the times we tried and failed has taken its toll on us. After you will have buyers remorse...Normal...Fear of not losing it all...Normal. Fear of gaining it all back..Normal...

It is all part of the process of the changes you will make to succeed. Retraining your brain will take time so you have to follow your teams advice as much as you can. Once you start to look at food as a source of nutrients for your body instead of a tool to deal with all the issues in life you will see things differently and your strength and resolve will grow.

For now it is all fear and self doubt that plagues just about everyone who has WLS. :)

Have you looked in any of the bariatric recipe sites? Check them out to get ideas of nummy things you will be able to eat.

I am biased about this web site. She does our local bariatric cooking classes. Amazing lady!

What food do you plan to never eat again? i don't have anything on a permanent removal list.... however... my daily habits are way different.

I used to eat ice cream probably nearly daily for dessert. i might have a small amount a few times a year now. If i eat more than a small portion, ice cream tends to give me cramps - I have become somewhat lactose intolerant (but cheese, yogurt etc are no problem)

I used to eat pizza, fast food sometimes - like maybe twice a week? Now, I rarely have a slice of pizza- only good ones! I really don't eat fast food, not because i can't but because i only want to eat good food these days and I plan better. Who actually WANTS to eat the Dairy Queen $5 lunch or the Taco Bell big box of crappy food? i have no idea why i didn't value myself higher - now I go to a wonderful restaurant and during their happy hour, i get a delish shrimp skewer for $5!

It is very normal to be fearful, but most of the dietary restrictions you read about on this forum simply go away over time. I am 3 years post op and many of my aquaintances don't even know i had surgery. I am a small eater but so are all the other middle aged skinny chicks. :)

Good luck and much success to you!!!

This is normal. As pointed out in other resonses, the fear of the unknown is what get's us.

From my experience, my decision to get VSG was the best choice I've ever made (Next to asking my wife to marry me).

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
