Post Op HeadACHE / ears ringing.. Help

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I am 2 days post op! I had a very rough time with nausea the first day.night. That subsided but today the headache i have OMG! Feels like my head is going to explode! I am sipping all day, I got in a Protein shake and I am sipping sugar free G2 Gatorade. Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions on how to help? I also did moist heat packs and liquid Tylenol with no relief. PLEASE HELP :/

I had a headache my 3rd day and they told me to skip a dose of the pain meds and nausea pills because both could cause headaches and to take extra strength Tylenol. They also said it could be a hunger headache. Luckily it worked for me.

I could not do the pain meds at all they made me so sick in the hospital. I got the liquid Tylenol and it seems to be helping somewhat. TY for the reply :))

Personally I get crazy headaches from artificial sweeteners. If I were you I would switch from G2 to regular Gatorade (a mixture of 1/2 Gatorade and 1/2 water). If you have any concerns doing this please consult your nutritionist. My team was fine with me drinking regular Gatorade in order to stay hydrated, take in enough calories, and avoid artificial sweeteners.

Edit: I would also try a Protein shake without artificial sugar if just swapping out the G2 doesn't help. Jay Robb is a good brand to look at.

Also my ears kept ringing in the beginning too and I read online on WebMD that severe weight loss and/or anemia can cause ringing in your ears.

Thanks! That may be a good idea to try I only had one 32 ounce bottle so far. I really think it was a delay getting the anesthesia out of my system. I am feeling much better today, but last night was horrible! The ear ringing has faded too, I am just sticking to my Tylenol for now :))

Watch your Tylenol intake...too much of that and you can have ringing in your ears.

I have also experienced rebound headaches from the pain medicine...you think you are taking meds to alleviate pain and causing more pain.

One other thought...are you getting the headaches or ringing because of dehydration?? Had that too!

I was sleeved on 2/4 and like you I had nausea and a horrible headache, much worse than the pain of the surgery. In the hospital they thought it was the morphine so we stopped that but it continued. It took three days for it to go away. A few people since have mentioned it may have been caused by the anesthesia and I think that sounds plausible. I do get headaches from artificial sweeteners so I am drinking regular Gatorade diluted with Water, suggested by my doctor's office. It has helped me feel so much better.

Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks for the replies! I def think it was a side effect of the anesthesia because I could not that the pain meds at all. I had 2 pumps and within minutes was so sick dry heaving. It was awful, I am trying to get enough Water but ya never know! The ringing has subsided somewhat still faint. I have not taken anything for pain in a few days. I have my next appt in two weeks so we shall see! :D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
