You need a passport, passport card, or enhanced license to cross back into the US on your way home. A birth certificate is no longer accepted by US border agents.

I was told that I would need a passport or passport card to cross into Mexico due to a newer Mexican law (they would not accept enhanced licenses), so I went and got a passport card prior to my trip. Turned out they never asked me for any ID at all when I cross into Mexico. But I did need to show my passport card when coming back into the US, as expected.

I was still a little miffed by the whole thing, as I had to physically go to a passport office in order to get my passport card in time, plus it cost over $100 and it turned out I didn't even need it! I already had an enhanced license.

I went and got my passport book. I needed one anyways and plan on celebrating hitting my goal with a cruise :). When the medical van picks you up they drop you and your luggage off and you have to walk across the border. Both ways so pack light or have luggage on wheels. While you walk across they do a scan of the bus and then the bus picks you up on the other side. We stood around for a long time waiting for them to look at the scan and we crossed over into Mexico around midnight. They were very laid back on that side. I did have to show my passport on both sides of the border. I think everyone in my group had passports and we all showed them. I guess it depends on whatever person is working. I wouldn't take chances with it though. My center told me I had to have a passport or passport card.

I'd be more concerned about coming back. The US Border agents are much more diligent than the Mexican agents. Let us know how it goes and good luck with your surgery!

Hello everyone, my mom will be traveling with me to Mexico for my surgery but she doesn't have a US passport as she is not a citizen. She does have a resident alien card that is still valid. Will this be sufficient to cross the border back into the U.S.?

From us-immigration.com: "Any lawful permanent resident in good standing can come back into the United States by land or sea with nothing more than their permanent resident card, also known as the green card."

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
