3 weeks out of surgery and plateauing.

Recommended Posts

I am 3 weeks 2 days out of surgery and have lost 45 pounds. but I have not lost any weight in the last 3 days. I know I am eating so little my body should still be losing weight. before the weight gain I was an athlete and when I cut weight I consumed more calories than I am now and would drop weight fast. Has anyone else plateaued this early in their process? I know I should not weigh myself everyday but its a hard habit to break being a former wrestler.

What you're experiencing is the famous 3 week stall. It will pass. Keep doing what your doing. Mine staff started half way through week 3 and ended at end of week 5. You're going to hit LOTS of stalls, so don't get discouraged. I'm eating just a prescribed and working out like a fiend, but I've been in a stall since mid January. Not too worried though because I recently moved to size 16 jean...with no "W" next the number! My goal is size 14 by end of March, but it's just a goal, not a do or die situation.

3 1/2 weeks and 45 lbs! Say it out loud and pat yourself on the back and do a jumping jack! That's huge! Congrats.

I'm at 2 1/2 weeks and at this stall. Started to go to gym to walk n bike for am hr and it seems to be helping. But I'm not worried and only like 13lbs down post op (1-19). Seems like it's normal. And I still weigh myself everyday but it motivates me to walk and get in my Protein and fluids. Good luck!!

I had the three week stall as well and I am now 3 months out and it was the only time that I have stalled. I wish my doctor would have given me a heads up so I didn't panic. A good reason why this board/forum is great to be a part of.

You will be fine.

I'm so glad to hear about the 3 week stall here. I was 3 weeks on Monday (surgery January 12). I've lost 30 lbs, but then just stopped. No gain, just a halt.

Hopeful that it picks up again. Feeling kind of blue about it, and just the whole overwhelming emotion of surgery and recovery, too.

Don't feel blue. It take overnight to put the weight on and it's not going to come off overnight. The sleeve is not the gastric bypass. It's meant to be slower so you can be more methodical in changing to a healthy lifestyle.

thanks everyone for the replies. It's nice to know people are out here rooting for you and letting you know things from personal experience. Its better knowing about the plateau than thinking that I am doing something wrong.

Congratulations! You have reached The Dreaded Week-3 Stall. It's perfectly normal, and just about all of us have suffered through it. You're not crazy, and your doctor didn't screw up. In fact, you might not lose any weight for two weeks or even longer. But don't worry – after that, the weight will start falling off if you stick to your program. And, the inches will continue to come off even while the scale isn't budging. Here's a good article that explains why it happens and why we all have to go through it. Hang in there. Pretty soon it'll be in the rear-view mirror and you'll be dropping weight again!

(Apologies to BP regulars who have seen this repeatedly, but it's a big deal to those who are going through it!)

My surgery was Jan 5th, and I hit my stall last week. I upped my Protein a bit, freaked out a second and moved on. This week I saw some downward movement. I've decided to use each stall as a reflection moment of what has happened over the last few weeks and how happy I am. I know some find it hokey, but it helps me to reframe my goal- to be able to hike without pain again! It's so frustrating because at first we like and have instant gratification from the fast weightloss, but then it slows. I guess that 8 week mindfulness course I took a year ago helps, LOL.

I too am in a stall I have been for about 2 weeks - if the scale goes down it may be by 1 pound if I'm lucky . I am 5 weeks post op and am just wondering how many calories I should be eating ? I eat only Protein rich foods - am wondering if I should start eating fruits and veggies ? Help! What do you eat ?

I'm 2.5wks postop and I have also stalled. I was getting very discouraged until I saw that this is a common issue. I have noticed that my clothes fit better and my face is thinning out. I'm hoping to get past this plateau soon!!!

You will get over the plateau and don't let the scale harsh your mellow. Your body is losing inches even if the scale is not moving. I am currently eating about six ounces of food. I just had my second check up with the doc and he approved me to move to phase four. I am making a lot of recipes off of Pintrest. I search for wls recipes. there are a lot of good options for soft food and on not to much for pureed. I eat almost anything just in a much smaller portion or if I decide to make a recipe I look for ways to make it healthier. I do not measure how much I am eating really I just listen to my body and take my time so my brain will register that I am full. I have even been making deserts weekly that my family love and are healthy. I also am jogging about 2.25 miles every other day on my elliptical to help me get over any plateau's. I just got the all clear from the doctor to do any activity so Monday I am going to start back on a weight lifting regiment. I just hope I can get back in shape like my fighting days. just still worry about skin sag. I am not noticing any yet really and am already down 70 lbs.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
