Will I only loose 10kg!

Recommended Posts

Ok freaking out again!

I am due to have surgery in 3 days

I have lost 6kg in two weeks on the prop diet

I started with a low BMI and now it looks like it will be around 31 day on surgery

So I plugged my numbers into one of those online calculators and it says my estimated at loss at 12 months is only 10kg!!!! What? Why am I doing this for 10kg!!!

My starting wt was 98kg I am now 92 and I really wanted to get to 68-70kg zone...which is 20-22kg!

Is this unrealistic? My surgeon has not set any goals for me, just the standard 70% of excess weight loss...which according to the calculator is only 10kg

Did you loose more than expected? Do you think the Sugery was woth it for lose with a lower BMI?

Those calculators don't predict YOUR weight loss. They calculate the AVERAGE weight loss of all WLS patients.

I'm 5-1/2 months post-op and have a gastric sleeve. I started at 235 pounds, have lost 72 pounds, and now weigh 163 pounds (you'll have to do the pounds to kilograms conversion).

The calculator at https://www.realize.com/do-i-qualify/potential-results/comparison says I have a 50% chance of losing at least 59 pounds in 12 months.

(Obviously, I've beaten those odds already.)

And that calculator gives me a 20% chance of losing 85 pounds in 12 months, which would put me at 150 pounds, which is indeed my personal weight loss goal.

I will guaran-damn-tee you that I will lose ALL my excess weight loss (85 pounds) within 12 months.

But here's one observation I think is true: A positive, determined attitude is critical to being successful with WLS.

Best wishes.

I was 31 bmi the day I had surgery. I also lost 60 pounds prior to surgery. I'm now down a total of 83 pounds. And am 33 pounds from my goal weight. I didn't even know there were calculators for this. I plugged my numbers in to the calculator @@VSGAnn2014 provided (thx it was fun) and I've already surpassed the 50 % chance of losing 66 pounds mark!!! So while the calculators are interesting...you simply can't calculate human potential.

@VSGAnn2014 Your posts are always so motivating. Love your attitude.

@Rosie77 I do think attitude and approach make all the difference. I come to this site to stay engaged and focused on my goals. I go to support group meetings and advanced skills classes offered by my surgeon. These things keep me focused. I truly believe that if I just got the surgery and stopped there, I would maybe lose half of my excess weight like the stats show. But I have learned that the people that stay engaged in their goals are more successful. Everyone on this site who has hit and maintained their goals could have walked away long ago. But I believe being here keeps them successful. Don't be discouraged by stats, be determined to make the most of the opportunity.

P.S. Confession - I had to use a calculator to convert kg to lbs.

I think the calcualtors are wrong. They just churn out statitics. If your determined to lose more than 10kg, then you will. Determination and a positive attitude will beat the odds any day.

I was sleeved on December 2nd 2014 and my BMI was under 30. I weighed 85.5 kg at the start of pre op shake diet and 82kg on the day of surgery. I am now 9 weeks post op and now weigh 70kg. I have absolutely no doubt I will get to my goal weight of 60kg. This surgery has completely changed my life for the better.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
