Is the pre op diet needed?

Recommended Posts

the pre-op "shrink your liver" view would be more believable if every surgeon did it...but because there are so many pre-op diets and so many that do no pre-op diet, as a well educated patient, it makes me wonder.

honestly, i wouldn't worry about a few food funerals...but i'm no expert... my surgery is coming up on 2/10...

A pre-op diet will only shrink you're fatty liver if you infact have one, I think the more weight someone has to lose the more likely they are to have Fatty liver...But not everyone has this issue before surgery.

Some pre-op diets are done for Inurance and not the Dr as well.

Yup. When I asked my doctor about why he didn't do a pre op diet, claiming many doctors do it to "shrink the liver" he laughed a little. He said he had recently attended a seminar that basically had stated that the liver shrinking is so minimal, it really makes no difference one way or the other. But I'm definitely not advocating anyone go against their own doctors orders. They are all different.

listen to your doc. follow the plan. you will be able to have these foods again. but your portion size is limited. I have had pizza a few times. a slice will be more than enough. pre-op is also a time to dedicate yourself to the seriousness of your weight loss goals. good luck

This might of been said before but maybe we are assigned the pre-op to give us a glimpse of what is to come, speaking from my own experience I am a week in to my liquid diet is it fun,NO is it doable YES. The way I look at it is as a test, if I can't suck it up for 2 weeks how am I going to live the rest of my life eating what is essentially a restricted diet.

The negatives for me so far: headaches, nausea, cramps (from Protein shakes) and a general disinterest in food ( I use to go the supermarket like I was going to a party, my most recent trip was underwhelming) Positives: Lost 11 lbs in a week, a general disinterest in foods and saving money on groceries. Hang in there folks and good luck!

Just getting as healthy as you can before surgery can help with any risks associated with it. It's not easy to change eating habits but for me it would have been harder to recover from surgery and getting used to eating completely different at the same time. My surgery is scheduled or next Wednesday and as of yesterday I've lost 30 lbs. thats 30 more I won't have to lose and will be lighter for surgery

I've done this twice, once with band and once with sleeve. The first time, I didn't play by the rules and it set the tone for my whole unsuccessful experience. This time I got counseling, went to the support groups, and did the pre op right. Obviously this is a different surgery and its so great not to feel so hungry I'd be willing to eat carpet (if it were fluffy), but I feel different in so many ways, and already more confident of success than I EVER was with the band. I do believe, for me, part of it has been the different approach this time.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
