Gastric sleeve to bypass

Recommended Posts

I just got home from the hospital. The surgery went well. I'm running a mild fever if it gets worse I'll have to go back in. The pain is pretty bad.

I hate that you're in so much pain. I pray it gets better quickly. I've read a few of your posts because I am scared to death of this happening to me. I've had controlled reflux for the last ten years. I am now a week post op and this reflux is killing me ????. My surgeons nurse says it will just take time, but I'm scared of having to have revision. I would never have chosen that. I weighed 199 the morning of my surgery (5'4"). Good luck with everything - Amye

I wish I would have know about how the sleeve can increase reflux before I had surgery but sadly I did not connect the dots. I'm not exactly sure if I didn't highlight my existing reflux problem with everything else going on trying to get approved. My Doctors didn't think it was an issue. However the pain got to a uncontrollably point where revision was my only option. I a week out from revision and I'm so glad I did it. Don't be afraid of revision most sleeve patients who have reflux can keep it under control without issues.

I'm very disappointed in your doctors. My center stressed, at each and every informational meeting, that if you have even mild regular heartburn bypass is the best route to take.

They should have you taking omeprazole (maybe not til your 3 week check up) - that may help. It's taken for six months to prevent ulcers. If it helps, stay on it. That's what I was on pre-RNY for my reflux.

Hopefully you're on the mend soon :)

I agree I don't think it was stressed enough by my surgical team or I would have skipped the sleeve and had the RNY in the first place.

How far out were u when u revised? I am only two weeks out, but I've dealt with reflux for the last ten years and what I'm experiencing now is unreal. I wake up in the middle of the night with acid in my throat and mouth. Ears, nose, and eyes on fire. My teeth feel as if the enamel is being eaten off. I've been told that it's too early to stress, but I can't help but to be worried.

I am currently taking Omeprazole 20mg in the AM and PM and I chew tums during the day. I will see the nurse tomorrow and talk about stronger options.

I was 15 months out. I was taking 40mg in the morning and in the evening. I was also chewing gums like a mad woman. It does sound like you are miserable! I'm sorry your having so much trouble.

It's easy to say not to stress about it when your not the one in pain.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
