Hello everyone! I'm new to this site and 8 weeks post op. I'm having a hard time drinking Water and getting enough Protein. Since surgery water d tastes funny to me. I know it's strange but I can't drink it without a flavor packet. I've never been much of a meat eater, so I'm struggling with my protein intake as well. Plus, I've only lost 30 lbs since surgery. 228 surgery date. 197 currently. Please help!

I had the same thing with Water after surgery, it seems pretty common. I like the little flavor squeeze bottles (Mio and the like) better than the powder packets because you can control how concentrated the flavor is. Just carry one with you in your purse and use it to make the Water taste nice!

Also what has helped me is getting a water bottle and carrying it with me all day. That makes me more likely to sip on it throughout the day, and then when it's time to refill you get a little walking in.

meat is the easiest Protein source but you can also get a lot from dairy and eggs. I also don't know what I'd do without Quest bars, though at 8 weeks you may or may not be able to eat those yet. If you buy the $15 membership at GNC, you can get a box of Quest bars for $25 (they are normally $35) and for me, that's 12 meals, so the cost comes out pretty well. Of course, you don't want to eat bars for all your meals but they are shelf-stable and portable unlike many other Protein sources, so they are great for having on hand for a food emergency if they work for you.

Finding a Protein shake you can tolerate is important too. I like the Syntrax flavors, especially chocolate Truffle, Peanut Butter Cookie, and Cappuccino. You can mix them up with sugar-free flavored syrups and low fat milk for extra protein. Eventually your goal will be not to depend on supplements, but early on you just can't eat enough to get all the protein in without them!

My NUT suggests making your fluids also your Protein. So add protein powder/drinks to most everything you drink, and eat. 8oz of Protein Shake is also equal to 8oz of fluids.

I am 2 months as of the 9th of this mouth, but food and Water just won't stay down, it very hard to eat anything and go into the bathroom because it comes up before you take a second bite. It doesn't matter what I eat , it just doesn't go down even water I can not drink 8oz sometimes in a day. I keep getting this big air bubble and after it my stomach feels as if someone hit me very hard. I just don't want the pain

Water at times bubbles up on me as well. Try taking smaller sips and chew your food very well and slowly. I drink everything with a straw, it helps with air bubbles. I had problems getting it all in in the beginning as well and still have to work at it. I have to learn how to have some drink (water or protein) by my side most of the day and just sip, sip, sip, slowly. It is work, certainly at first, but does get better. I know that if I don't get my Water and Protein, I feel nauseous and quite ill. Some people who don't get enough water, have nausea so bad they vomit. I've been close but not quite.

Good luck

8 weeks and 30lbs! Congrats. Yes congrats! You need to be proud of that. I'm at the dreaded two/three week stall and hope to hit 30 by the eight week mark!

I've never been able to drink plain water. Briefly after surgery cuz I was so dang thirsty but not without mio or something. Fluids for me are Soup, sf Jello is my friend, Popsicles, Luke warm vanilla roobios tea (tazo) and flavored water. It's an alllll day affair though to get it all in.

My protein is mainly still from 1 scoop of whey tech protein with 4oz of water. 24g and only one sugar. First thing in AM and again in Late afternoon. The rest comes from a greek yogurt, Soup, eggbeater, etc...but I can choke down two shakes knowing I'm getting in 8oz of Fluid and 48g of protein.

I have the same problem with Water but Grape Propel and Orange Gatorade go right down. I started out

liking everything over crushed ice, now I just keep the Gatorade or Powerade in fridge. Because I wouldn't

care for the drink as much when the Ice melted.

Hi all, I was just sleeved yesterday and am having trouble. Every time I take a sip of Water or Protein Drink, I get horrible painful spasms in my esophagus. Has anyone had similar experience? Does it eventually go away?

Are you really sipping? Using 1oz med cups? I used those for the first 3-5 days religiously and sipped from that. If I took anything in to fast I got the pain in my chest. Now it happens with food(almost three weeks out)

Good luck.

I'm only 3 days out, but yesterday, my 1st full day home, I was able to drink 80oz of liquid, including 48mg of Protein. My son is 3 years out and he went through a multitude of Protein powders before finally finding one that was good. I ordered mine 2 weeks before surgery so that I would have it post-op. Its called Optimum Nutrition, 100% whey, Gold Standard, Rocky Road, 5 lbs. I put 2 scoops in a 12oz shaker bottle (shake vigorously) then put it in the freezer till its almost frozen. shake it again, then enjoy, and I mean REALLY enjoy...its really, REALLY good!!!

In talking about Water and Protein, I noticed that some of us have the bypass and others the sleeve...those are very different surgeries and therefore our experiences will also be quite different.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
