Why did you choose GBP?

Recommended Posts

I'm at the very beginning of this process and reading everything I can get my hands on. I've been concentrating on researching the surgical options. I was wondering if anyone would share the reasons they chose gastric bypass over gastric sleeve. Would you share your decision process? Are you happy with your decision?

My surgery is April 21st. I was set on the sleeve until my appointment with surgeon. He said it was my choice but when he showed me the weight loss I could expect from the sleeve vs. Bypass I chose bypass. 50lbs difference for my body type. 5'5" 370. Plus I had acid reflux during pregnancy bad & he said it could come back with the sleeve. I don't want to go through that again. The only thing I'm going to not like about the bypass is giving up my NSAIDS for pain/ sinus headache. I've been trying to avoid them to get in the habit of taking other things. All in all the thoughts of maybe losing the extra 50 was my biggest factor. Good luck!

I am now 4 months post op. I was planning on the sleeve until I actually spoke with my gastroenterologist and learned that the sleeve can make Gerd/reflux worse which would mean a revision to bypass anyway.

I also had type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and stage 3 kidney disease which was why I was having this procedure done in the first place.

I had RNY on 9/29 and immediately my severe Gerd and type 2 diabetes was gone! In addition I had a fairly easy recovery and have been doing fantastic ever since. Even my kidney function has improved.

I have not regretted having RNY for even 1 second. The only thing I di regret is not having it sooner. I might have not gotten kidney disease which is not reversible.

Good luck on your decision and your upcoming surgery!

I choose gastric bypass from the get go. I wanted to extra support of knowing that if I eat something high in sugar my grouch pouch would let me know by dumping syndrome. I never want to eat sugar foods again. Plus gastric bypass is the gold standard! That was enough for me. :) however I do think it should be a personal choice and weigh all of the pros and cons. I am nine weeks post op and have lost 62 pounds! Not a single regret!

Pre-op, my only "fat problem" was GERD. Bypass is the only compatible surgery.

Higher weight loss with the bypass too. Go big or go home right?

I was diabetic when pregnant, and my mom has type two diabetes - that's in my future if i don't drop some serious poundage. GB for the win.

Good luck with whatever decision you make :)

This is really helpful, I'm having similar pressures from the surgeon for the sleeve, but my gut says bypass.

I went bypass as well, mine was revision from a band. I had bad reflux with the band, but my doctor prefered bypass as the tried and true surgery. so happy with my decision.

It was a hard decision for me, but I'm so happy I choose RNY bypass. I just felt like it has been proven for many more years and the long term success rate is higher. My insurance only covers once, so I wanted to be sure I picked the best.

My surgeon recommended the RNY to me. I was not a candidate due to my BMI only (BMI was only 35), but with my sleep apnea, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, GERD, and diabetes he said it would benefit me greatly. I do regret it. I regret that I didn't do it sooner. There are days when it is difficult but I am so happy that I had it done. I am 12 weeks post op and I am completely off the insulin (only taking 250 mg of Metformin twice daily), off the blood pressure medication, off the cholesterol medication, off the omeprazole and the pressure on my CPAP machine has been turned way down. I have lost almost 60 pounds and I feel great.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
