Possible restart of diabetes meds

Recommended Posts

Hi to everyone!

I had my VSG on 1/07/15, and I, like most diabetics, was taken off of my diabetes meds when I left the hospital. Great! Wonderful! I'd heard this happens so often and was excited about getting off insulin and metformin. The first 2 weeks, my fasting (morning) blood sugars hovered around 125 ~. But since I've started eating "food", my morning sugars are high - 160-180. I am being VERY careful with my food choices, staying really low carb. I'm thinking my PCP will probably start me back on metformin, at least until I lose more weight ( down 34 lbs so far, yay!)

Has anyone else had to restart their diabetes meds, and were you able to get off them for good when you lost more weight? I'm really kinda bummed out about this. I will admit to not exercising as much as I should, my only (poor) excuse is my energy has completely disappeared! But I'm being super careful with food. Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions?

So far my blood sugars are amazing, but I am just barely starting out. How are your Vitamins? I am taking calcium citrate, Iron, multi, and sublingual B12. I have heard B12 is great for energy.

I don't have this issue, but I'd say don't despair yet. As you lose weight, your blood sugar could normalize.

We want so much, so fast. I'm actually a RNY patient, but this is sort of an issue of mine. Pre surgery, I was on metformin and glipizide. They took me off the flip but left me on the metformin. Surgery was 10-28-14. My levels are around 116, fasting. That isn't great, but I'll take it. My a1c is 6. I'd like to be off all drugs, but I'm not. At least not yet. Pre-surgery my levels were always around 160. I am happy with my improvement.

I strongly suggest you journal all your food. I use fitness pal for that. I'm 61 and think that might have something to do with my situation. I work at staying grateful. good luck.

I just went in to see my doc. yesterday, for my follow-up (diabetes). My surgery was 12/3/14. My A1C is at 6.2 (pre-diabetic), down from 7, and should being going down more still, the father out from surgery I go. My doc. reminded me that the A1C covers 4 months of cell history, so that means there are 2 months PRIOR to surgery that is in that test, as well. It probably is the same for you, also (well, actually 3 months, since your surgery was in January). I am off my Victoza, as my fasting numbers are about 80 in the morning before eating, and about 110 (2 hours) after eating. I went off my medication once my numbers went down under 100 three times in a row, and never went back on. That was before my surgery, during the pre-op diet. Are you keeping your carbs under 50? That's what my dietician recommends for me. It has worked wonders, and my doc. believes the next time I see her I will be officially non-diabetic. That is what I did all this for. I am 53, and have been diabetic for almost 4 years. Good luck to you!

Yes, I had to get back on Glucophage and have been taking it. I didn't take it like for a few weeks after surgery because wasn't eating much (it was only liquids and etc). When I started eating food, blood sugars got high so had to get back on it.

thanks for the feedback. I also am an older sleever, and diabetic for 15 years. I must learn patience and I'll continue to do what I can to improve and remain hopeful that this issue WILL improve.

peace!

My doctor did not take me off my diabetes medicine and it's a good thing. My blood sugars are all over the place and I am eating mostly Protein. Last night I had a major crash in the middle of the night. This afternoon I was at 258. My fasting for her always on the high side compared to pre surgery. Were 70 to 90 now 110 to 120. Has anyone else experienced this major fluctuation? Had blood work done have my last appointment and they said everything was perfect so I assume my a 1 C was ok. guess I will give it a little more time and then talk to my PCP. I was hoping I could get off the drugs but after 10+ years maybe that's asking too much.

my fasting sugar this morning was 133, not great, but better than the 150-170 it's been lately. I ate very little yesterday, because I felt nausea most of the day. One thing I didn't do was have any Protein Water late in the evening. I sometimes would have 1 because I know I fell short of getting enought protein for the day and my thinking was, its carb and sugar free, so it should be ok. Well, I think it's not ok, and won't be having any in late afternoon or evening. I'm eager to see if that has a real impact on my BS levels.

Hey @gobsmacked... I too am diabetic.. my doctor lowered my amount of insulin to take after surgery and a few pounds of weightloss... some days my sugar is still higher than normal... I just have to remember that this is not 100% sure cure of diabetes. .. and the people I know of who had the surgery and the diabetes were cured, they lost 100+ pounds and I'd in their normal bmi

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
