Protein Supplements?

  1. 1. Do you have protein supplements?

    • Nope. My surgeon doesn’t support them, and I’ve been meeting my needs through high-protein foods.

    • No, I can’t stand the thought of processed protein. I try not to, but sometimes it’s the only way I can get my protein.

    • Only in emergencies. I keep some bars, shakes, or powder in the car or at work so I can always get my protein no matter what happens.

It’s not always that easy to hit your 65 to 80 or more grams per day, whether you just had surgery or you’re a few months or years out. Some weight loss surgery patients depend on Protein supplements like bars, shakes, and powders, while others try to get their protein from foods. Do you have protein supplements?

I've use Protein Powder for years well before WLS. I prefer to have a Protein Shake before my morning workout. Other than that I get my Protein from food.< /p>

My body tells me if I need more Protein and I have an egg or some salmon. I think our American cultire is obsessed with protein, but that's just me.

Prior to WLS I was the same way. I aimed for 50gms of Protein and actually loss weight at that amount. Of course being a vegetarian it's the first question everybody asks you. I use to use it as my breakfast/pre gym drink. I use it as supplement now because of the sleeve requirements.

I too do a morning shake. Sometimes I just add it to my morning coffee. After that I eat regular food for the rest of the day.

I still drink one Protein Shake every morning before I work out and this is approved by my surgical team. it is a Premier Protein which has 30g of Protein and very low sugar. The only time I have a Protein Bar is if I am out and about and don't have time to have a meal then i can eat about a half of one before I am full. That happens rarely because I try to plan my day so I get my meals in.

I'm 5-1/2 months out and typically drink (slowly) a 25-protein-gram, 170-calorie Protein drink for Breakfast. This works well with my morning appetite (pretty nil) and schedule (very little time for actual food prep).

However, I get the rest of my daily Protein (usually another 70 grams of protein) from animal, dairy and plant sources.

I am over five months out from surgery and have not seen the scale move in about three months. Yes, that's right. And further to discussions with the nutritionist and the after care staff, it seems likely that I am not getting enough Protein (and fat) into my every day eating.

So, I re-committed to one Protein shake a day and either another Protein Shake or a protein bar, if needed, depending on my level of exercise. And I am exercising quite a bit. Not fanatically, but more than my body is allowing to release weight.

I have some Quest bars. I use unjury Protein shakes, and others. Some make me gag; others are more tolerable.

I love Protein powder and shakes. I add the powder to pudding and even coffee.

I gave up the Protein Bars because they're either high in carbs or the sugar alcohols cause some heinous flatulence. I'm going to experiment making my own.

Yes.

And I think this will be a lifelong support.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
