Change in sleep patterns

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else experienced a significant change in their sleep habits after having gastric sleeve surgery? I seem to the waking at the crack of dawn every morning. A cleaning the kitchen and doing laundry at 5 a.m. Is definitely not my norm. I have noticed that I have a lot more energy on the whole, as well. Just wondering if this is related to the surgery or some mental thing. Lol

Immediately after surgery, I went from sleeping 9+ hours/night to 5 hrs/night. I believe the change came about because I wasn't eating late at night anymore. Since I wasn't eating at 9 or 10pm, my system wasn't digesting food while I was sleeping and could focus on rest and recovery.

2 years later, I still wake up after 6 or 7 hrs of sleep.

Me too! I have always struggled with insomnia, so I have relied on Ambien for years. Before surgery I took one at bedtime and had no problem sleeping until my alarm went off in the morning. After surgery, I take my Ambien and four hours later I am wide awake. I feel like my body is processing the drug more quickly. I can't say that I am any more tired from getting much less sleep...so I think my body is just feeling better without carrying the 80 extra pounds along!

Having a lot of trouble with insomnia, early morning waking. I normally get up around 4:30 for work but now am waking around 2 and can't get back to sleep. I am 6 weeks out from surgery and it has happened all but two nights. I never had this problem before surgery.

I am wide awake at 5:45 every morning. Use to have to drag my ass out of bed. Now I hit the floor running. Lol. I think I sleep better since I exercise so much and don't have sleep apnea anymore. Guess my body doesn't need as much rest.

I am experiencing this. I wake up at 2, 3, 4 am and its very hard to go back to sleep, too dark to walk, and too noisy to do chores while everyone else is asleep. Makes me a little tired thru the day but then I can't break the cycle because I can't stay up past nine since I'm so sleepy.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
