I am almost 4wks post op. The week after my surgery I could sleep. But since then I cant. This is NOT NORMAL for me. I normally sleep like a bear. I'm one of those people who can sleep anywhere at anytime. I love my bed! But I just can't sleep now. This is without mid day naps too. Does anyone else have these issues?? My psychiatrist prescribed me trazodone but it hasnt worked. Only other meds i take are my antidepressants, and they don't cause restlessness. Ugh all I want is to sleep and my brain won't shut up!

I have trouble with insomnia also. I did some research on the web and it seems like it is a problem with gastric bypass patients, but nobody is sure why.

I take Restoril when I get absolutely to the point where I just have to sleep because I am so exhausted.

Trouble is that no mater what you take, be it Ambien, Lunesta, or the Restoril if you take it every single night it will soon stop working.

I am hoping that some day they come out with something better!

Try using magnesium supplements at night. That can help. There is a powdered citrus flavored magnesium supplement called "Calm" that you can get at health food stores. You mix it with Water and drink it in the evening. The powder does fizz when mixed with Water, like an Alka-Seltzer tablet, but don't worry. I checked with my nutritionist and she says this isn't the same as drinking carbonated beverages.

My nurse practitioner said that sleep disruption is very common in the first month following surgery but should lessen with time. She suggested Benadryl, but since I have a prescription for Ambien I've been using that.

I'm using my Ambien post op. It works well for me without feeling groggy the next day. My husband can't take it, it makes him sleepwalk, he now takes Lunesta. So everyone is different, but to me the value of regular sleep is worth the extra pill.

I have had horrible insomnia also. It started a week after I went home. I am so glad to understand why.

After surgery my Restless Leg Syndrome has gotten worse and has disrupted my sleep schedule. I'm trying to figure out why. Maybe because I am 10 days post op and have been resting more during the day? Has anyone else had this problem?

I am in my fourth month post op and I have no problem falling asleep however I am wide awake by the time I have gotten 5 hours. Then by 5pm I am exhausted and have to fight to stay awake. It really is very annoying.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
