1 month post- is my loss normal?

Hello!

Today i am 1 month post-op.

Highest weight: 261

Day of surgery: 252

Today: 228

Height: 5' x 7"

So, I've lost about 24lbs, & I'm thrilled over it! However, I see a lot of people with much larger numbers at this point. Is my weight loss normal/typical for my height & starting weight?

I only weigh once a month, so at one point I think I stalled.

I am 5 weeks out and have only lost 19 lbs. my doctor said that was fine. I was 255 on day of surgery, which was December 30, and now 236. I wish it was more but I'm just happy to see the scales moving down. I thought it would be more but everyone is different

Hahahahahahahahahahaha! You are seriously concerned that you ONLY lost 24 pounds in a month?

I "only" lost 14.8 pounds my first month. Tomorrow is my 5 month surgiversary and it's looking like I will have under a 5 pound loss for January. And you know what? I couldn't be more thrilled! I'm down 40 pounds... 64 since I started working to lose weight pre-op. I promise you, a year from now, when you are at or near goal, you won't care how much weight you lost the first month.

My philosophy is simple. It isn't a race. It isn't a competition. It is a journey. If my doctor and nutritionist are pleased then so am I.

I am 4 weeks out and have lost 18 pounds; on track with what my Dr. wants by my 6 week Visit. I wish it were more but am happy it is going down, not up.

24 is pretty tight. You need to change your perspective if you aren't thrilled with this success, otherwise you will not get the joy you deserve for all the hard work you've put in.

One thing I've come to understand and appreciate with my "slow" loss is that early on, I was still in a "diet mindset" about my weight loss. When we've dieted in the past, we've always wanted to lose weight super fast, because we wanted to be "done" with the diet. Well, news flash: our sleeves aren't going anywhere. We will never be "done" with our sleeves. So if it takes 6 months or 16 months to lose the weight, what does it really matter? We will get where we're going eventually. And there are actually some advantages to losing more slowly like:

  • replacing clothing less frequently
  • a chance for our skin to adapt and recover
  • not getting so many prying questions from friends and coworkers about our drastic weight loss

My primary care doctor has a philosophy that he doesn't care what the number is, as long as the scale in going in the direction it should be going.

I'm good with that.

PS: Someone remind me of this when I whine (and I WILL!) about slow weight loss after my surgery, tentatively scheduled for July 2015.

PPS: I'm not saying the OP is whining by asking this, I'm saying that I will surely whine in the future.

Hopefully your doctor can give you a better idea of what he or she expects of you. I don't know what is "normal" or "correct" and I have a feeling it all depends on your starting weight more than anything.

To be honest, reading these replies here and elsewhere on this board, I feel really sick over all of the "change your attitude" posts that people respond with when a poster is simply concerned they may not be losing what they could/should be. It's one thing to say "don't worry, you're doing great!" but it's another thing to cut someone down and (strongly!) suggest that they're setting themselves up for failure/disappointment for asking a simple question!

I am one month out and I lost 21 lbs so far . My surgery was 12/30 and i couldn't be happier I have never lost so much weight in a month . I wouldn't worry if I were you everyone is different .

We all wish this surgical tool would correct what for me was a 20 year battle overnight. Why cant I be ahead of the curve? After all, I committed to the process, this is a one way street (assuming you had the sleeve as I did), why for once can't I be the medical marvel?

We all have had those thoughts. Especially on the days the scale does not move. This is a marathon followed by two more marathons. My doc, like all medical professionals, talks in terms of statistical averages. Some loose faster than others, some do not loose at all. Stay the course, exercise, eat right and it will come off.

In terms of my personal numbers I had surgery 4.18...I weighed in at 400 on the day of surgery, today I weighed 249.....151lbs lost.....Food for me has evolved from a comfort blanket to nourishment. As I think about it, for me, the mental transformation has been much more important than the physical. It is a journey, success will be reaching my goal weight and maintaining.

Congrats hun... U should look at Ur weight loss as just that... Weight loss, ur down and not going up so keep up the good work... I just had my 2 1/2 month check up and I just knew I hasn't lost enough but my doctor told me I'm right on track. Started off 294 day of surgery 286. Now 10weeks later 250lbs it's awesome and I know it's going to get better... But I still have bad habits. Lol, but u are doing great hun stay positive and keep losing

Everyone loses at a different rate.. a loss is a loss.. you are going in the right direction!! Be happy with that!!

Just remember that many people DO have stalls in the process.. Keep on pressing on!

I really am thrilled that I've lost what i have so far! I feel so much better already & can tell a big difference in certain clothes.

I just wasn't sure if it was typical. My husband has said a lot of what everyone else has said, but it helps to hear it from people who are experiencing/ have experienced the same thing.

I'm not someone who can weigh a lot. It has always discouraged me. It's like no matter what it's never good enough or I think I could've worked out harder & more. But, you're all right! As long as it's going down I'm on the right path.

I'm just a Type A perfectionist.... I probably shouldn't even weigh. Just use a tape measure lol.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
