Dr. Huizenga Comment on "Biggest Loser" Finale

Recommended Posts

Did anyone else hear Dr. H's comment to Rob on the finale about how he lost the weight "without that distasteful weight loss surgery"? And that is why I don't tell people about my surgery. Unbelievable!

You are right and I can't edit the title (at least not on my Chromebook). I just saw another post on it, too, but can't figure out how to delete the post. Oh well!

I heard that on the finale and was disappointed! But, I do know that many contestants that are on the show had the surgery previously and had gained it all back and then some which is why they are now on the show. Of course, conversely, many contestants have the surgery AFTER they have been on the show! lol I'm not sure the motivation--maybe if they see they are starting to gain it back? They have also become more open about how many of their contestants have gained back all their weight.

I heard the comment and thought it interesting - seems the BL show is basically against having surgery although some of the contestants in former seasons had HAD weight loss surgery (and regained all the weight and more). I really wonder what the recidivism (regain) rate is for the contestants who were on the BL. I suspect the BL show will receive some angry letters about the remark! :)

As to regaining weight after being on BL and losing a bunch, I've heard 95% put at LEAST all their weight back on.

Anyone who said it is distasteful can take a long walk off a short pier! As far as regain is concerned it doesn't matter how you take it off if you don't retool your lifestyle and stick to it it will happen. Sad thing is he doesn't even understand the damage he does when he shoots his mouth off like that!

I just watched it last night and heard that comment as well! This was the first season I really paid attention to it and that kinda pissed me off. He made it seem like WLS is a walk in the park and quick fix. I watched that show for some inspiration but now I probably won't watch again. That man apparently has no idea.

I don't think 95% put all their weight back on. Curious where you got that statistic.

Not the first time I've heard this statistic. I heard it a few years ago watching the Today show, then again most recently from my nutritionist. I think there are a number of articles that describe the epic fail of the Biggest Loser...just googled them. Not quite sure why folks support the show by watching.

I didn't hear exact numbers but Bob Harper, the trainer, was on Watch What Happens Live and mentioned briefly about how many contestants eventually gain the weight back. He implied it was a high number but it could be that to him a small percentage is a high number for what he was hoping. I'll have to try to find the episode online for a true reference

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
