I am almost 7 weeks post op and I am having major issues with Protein shakes. I have tried whey concentrates, whey isolates, rice Protein (yuck) and pea protein (double yuck) and they all make me very bloated and crampy and I end up being in pain for 5 – 6 hours after drinking them.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get my protein in? If I drink the shakes, I am in constant pain, if I don’t, I feel weak and lethargic from lack of protein.

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

If you are using milk to mix your Protein with, switch to Water or lactose free milk.

I became lactose intolerant after the surgery and had the same symptoms. I ended up really sick and dehydrated because my pouch hurt all the time and once I switched it all went away!

Keep me posted :)

The Protein Shakes made me throw up, I HATE THEM!!!! so my doc told me about Isopure Protein Drinks. They come in a glass bottle, look like Gatorade and have 40g of Protein in each bottle. They sell them at the Vitamin Shoppe. ...you can go to their website if you don't have a store near you. They taste great, are 100% whey protein and tastes like Gatorade and are the texture of Gatorade!!!!

Thanks for the great suggestions. I use almond milk to make my shakes because I am lactose intolerant. I think I also have an intolerance to whey. May have to find some other type of Protein...

@@SueWVA, I had major problems at first with Protein shakes. I would describe the feeling the same as you.

I called my doctors office and they told me to go get Premier Protein Shakes from costco or SAMs. In addition they had me move to a lactose free milk.

They told me to take 1/3 to 1/2 of the Protein shake which is 11 oz. and mix it with the lactose free milk. As soon as I started doing this I was able to get my Protein Shakes down and was satisfied and most important comfortable.

At about 6 weeks I was able to drink a whole shake without milking it down.

This might be a solution for you.

Good luck!

By the way, when you mix it with milk you are trying to get to 8 oz.

Have you tried the muscle mile shakes. After about a month they were the only things I could stomach any more.

I have the muscle milk lite - chocolate.

If you are having a problem getting Protein mixing a shake with Water or almond milk seems counter productive to me.

If you are lactose intolerant then drink Soy or lactose free milk. No point in living off shakes. There is a gram of Protein per ounce of milk and soy milk. There is no nutritional value to almond milk. So If you can drink three cups of milk over a day, you are at 24 grams of protein from just drinks.

I don't know what stage you are at but you can also make smoothies out of yogurt, fruit and some honey. I still buy 100 calorie yogurts for Snacks as well as cottage cheese with a side of Dole pineapple.

I drink 2 premade Premier Protein shakes a day that I get at Sam's club. The chocolate ones taste very similar to Yahoo chocolate drinks. they are a little pricey but since I eat so little I can afford them and they are obviously doing the trick. I am 7 months out and ALL my health issues, except for arthritis, have disappeared and my doc said he was impressed with my Protein level. 60 grams of protein per 11 oz shake.

If you think you might be intolerant of whey, I believe there is another Protein source made from egg whites. Jay Robb?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
