Pre-Op and looking for a mentor

Recommended Posts

I have done all the pre-tests with the exception of the sleep apnea test which is this Friday. I have been to the informational session and am scheduled for my pre-op support group on Monday the 6th. Before that meeting I get to schedule my wellness assessment which is a 4 hour appt. with the bariatric team of, nutritionists, nurses, and psychologist. It is to my understanding that after that meeting I will be giving my surgery date. According to the nurse it could be as early as late February......I have only been in the process since 1/1/15 I am in a pilot program with my job so I am lucky enough to not have to wait for insurance approval. Is that to fast?? Am I rushing it?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I got my news from work in March. I was given 3 options (RNY, Lapband or MGB). I went right away to research. My appointments were separate. I had several appts with my Main doctor, others with my surgeon, another with the psychologist, labs...etc. That took a few other weeks. By May I had a date in June, My choice because I wanted to wait until the kids were out of school.

I dont think yours is too soon. Your new journey is just around the corner. Very exciting!

I am near Tampa , FL and tampa general hospital has a whole bariatric program. It's all done there. I did have to get my clearance from my PCP and sent over my last 2 years of tests. I've done all the blood work also.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
