When could you start PUREE diet? How many days post op?

Recommended Posts

Was hoping to find out when everyone's doctor allowed you to start the puree diet? Mine is 2 weeks post op.

Why are there variations for different doctors?

Thank you

I was on puree, along with liquids and some soft Proteins like eggs and yogurt, in the hospital.

Docs vary on their programs based primarily on their own experiences, and a lot of docs are still getting their feet wet with the sleeve after years of doing bypasses and lapbands while others have been doing sleeves for twenty years or more.

I asked my doctor about that today because of how many different diets there is out there. I am not on pureed until 3 weeks post op. She said they like to be cautious to ensure the staple line is healed and the swelling is down before they introduce pureed. I was just today given the go ahead for Protein shakes and greek yogurt, prior to that just Water broth and Jello.

2 weeks post-op, although I did try some egg whites and small tofu bits in broth a few days early without problem.

2 weeks postop. Same reason as stated, so not to challenge the staple line. I only just started puree and I can't eat much. Just a few spoon fulls.

One week post op. My surgeon does a staple line and a folded suture line. He doesn't want us on liquids too long cuz of risk of dehydration is high and can easily become fatal. He's never had a leak, been doing this surgery for 8 years.

Week 1 is Clear Liquids

Week 2 is full liquids

Week 3 is pureed

day 1-4 was clear liquids

day 5-14 was full liquids

day 15-35+ is purees and soft foods.

after that you begin transitioning to normal/regular foods

The 35+ is because they want me to wait for my 6 week follow-up appointment and get cleared by the surgeon & dietitian to move on from the purees. Mine is tomorrow -- it'll be 43 days post op for me.

I had four weeks on liquids post op, and 2 weeks all liquids pre op. So six weeks of liquids total, straight. Just follow your doctor's plan ???? you got this.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
