Keen Olfactory Senses Post Surgery

Recommended Posts

My tastes for things have changed. But I also can't do certain smells. There was a woman next to me eating Doritos and they were terrible. Cigarette smoke has gotten to be too much. I've gone out and had to leave early because the smokiness in the venue makes me gag.

Is anyone else having these issues?

I've had "dog nose" since my first pregnancy. I still have a hard time pumping my own gas. It got way worse right after WLS but it's tempered down now that I am over a year out.

I hope yours does as well. It sucks.

I hope it will die down for me as well. But yeah, I can smell everything

I could smell everything too post op, the one that drove me the most crazy was smelling other people's breath all the time. Thankfully it has subsided since. I would say by about the end of week 3 it seemed to be pretty much back to normal. I hope that it gets better for you, too!

i'm well over a year out and still smell people's breath like crazy. Like, I ride a shuttle to work from the parking lot, and I know these people are brushing in the morning. I should be a gingivits-sniffing dog.

Oh man. I could smell my coworkers breath something awful yesterday. I felt bad because I kept holding my breath when he talked to me. Here's hoping he didn't notice. Lol

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
