Self Pay-Where did u have it, what was the cost??

Recommended Posts

For anyone that had the Lap band surgery, where did you have it, and what was the self pay cost? I am not really to excited about Mexico but would like other options. The hospital near me is 16,000 and I really can't afford that much. Thanks!

Well, I went to Mexico because many of the doctors there have been doing lapbands for a lot longer than the doctors in the US so I can only give you my self pay experience there:

$8000 which included transportation to and from the clinic/hotel, 2 nights in the hotel, 1 night in the clinic, $100 fills with floroscopy. IIRC, that was a cash payment special they were running that month and now it's $8500.

Someone mentioned there was a doctor in, I think Kansas, that was doing them for the same amount as Mexico doctors. Just be REALLY sure to check out the background of ANY doctor and experiences from former patients.

I used Dr. Spivak in Houston, TX. My surgery was at Park Plaza Hospital.

The self-pay cost was $12,900 and that includes a year of after care and fills as well as support meetings every Tuesday night. Spivak has a wonderful bedside manner and his staff is great. He's one of the best laproscopic surgeons in Houston.

Goo Luck...

Hubby's having surgery 7/18 with Dr. Ariel Ortiz in Tijuana. Cost will be $8500.00. Everything as FurEllie described. Can't wait till July!

OCC has a website you can check out. If you're local...I would highly suggest a one on one appointment in the clinic. It'll put all your worries about going in Mexico to rest. Good luck!

I was self pay and also went to Mexico. The doctors in Mexico have more experience with the lap-band. The band has only been FDA approved since 2001 and many of the surgeons here in the US only have about 3yrs or less of experience. I payed $7,900.00 and that included everything except my airfare from my home state. My surgeon was Dr. Arturo Rodriguez here is a link to his website if you are interested

I went to Dr. Kirshenbaum in Denver. His web site is in my signature below. He charges $9950, and fills are $15 whenever you need them after that. There's an active thread on him right now if you want some more info. Just search for "Kirshenbaum" and you'll find it.

I used Dr. Alberto Aceves, in Mexicali MX. I cannot say enough good things about my experience. My cost was $7740.00 which included 1/2 of my airfare, and covered everything else. They picked us up at the airport, and took us to Mexicali, and other than my DH eating in the cafeteria, and us doing some shopping the night before surgery, we did not spend another dime.

I am in the same boat as you. I have researched, read, scoured the internet for information, and I've called many places. I've come to the conclusion that many other self-payers who are aprehensive about going to Mexico have: Dr. Kirshenbaum in Colorado is for me. I hear nothing but wonderful things about him, and the whole surgery experience (surgery fees, anesthesia, surgeon, 3 fills, and support group) is $9950. I've already spoke with his office once and plan to do my consultations with the nutritionist and the doctor in mid-March. They do them over the phone so that long distance patients don't have to make a bazillion trips. It is less expensive for me to go to him for my surgery and aftercare, including travel and lodging, than it is for me to have the surgery done locally. You may want to research in advance if any docs in your area are willing/able to provide any urgent aftercare needs or fills if you decide not to travel back and forth for fills. I hope your search goes well! Keep us posted on what you decide!

I am having my surgery on the 25th in the Dallas area. There is a new facility that is having a reduced rate to introduce their new facility. The cost is $9900. That includes 6 months of aftercare and fills. I had planned on going to Mexico as well until I saw the advertisement for this facility. I've heard lots of good things about them so far. I can honestly say that is makes me much more comfortable to stay "at home" for the surgery. However, I would have done what I needed to do which would have included Mexico if necessary. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
