International Travel After Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I'm new here and have my surgery scheduled for 2/20. I'm having second thoughts and starting to wonder if I should reschedule for a later date because of two International work trips in the following months...one 5 day trip to UK (I'm in Florida) only 3 weeks after surgery in mid-March, and then a 10 day trip to S. Africa mid-April (20+ hours of travel each way). Although my surgery coordinator told me it will be perfectly fine to travel,l I'm worried about feeling sick while I'm so far away or figuring out what to eat and energy levels.

I'd really love some advice on this and thoughts on if I should try to reschedule surgery until May or if I should be good to go. Thanks so much.

I am no expert, as I am only 16 days post. However, I can tell you that if your surgery goes as planned (the norm) then by the 3rd week you should have no pain. This is my 3rd week and I don't have pain. My incisions feel a little discomfort at times because of the stiches still healing. Nothing big to worry about.

Energy? Well, if you are like me that the space in my stomach is only 1 -2 ounces, calorie intake will be a concern which leads to energy or lack there of. (I can only shove 400 calories a day right now) So my advise if you chose to do these trips, LOTS of Protein shakes and LOTS of high Protein Bars with you at all times. The Protein helps you from becoming weak. Always hydrate. When you are not drinking your Protein shake, make sure you are drinking Water. Mind you, drinking the Protein Shake will take a good hour or so. Remember the size of the tummy and the liquid that is incoming.

I am sure more experienced people will chime in and you can gather all the info and make a decision at that time.

I will be sleeved tomorrow (prayers please). Will be traveling end of February over 18 hours flight. That will be 30 days post op and my doctor said its fine. I am concerned of course but I hope it will all go well.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
