Couples doing WLS together?

Recommended Posts

Anyone do WLS with a spouse? DH and I are both getting ready for bypass, and we are going next week to schedule our surgeries. We plan to have me go first & then he will have surgery once I am healed enough because we have a little one at home. So I was wondering if 2 weeks will be enough time for me to feel up to chasing my little one around the house so that DH can get his surgery? Also I would love to hear any couples success stories. :)

My fiance and I are both having WLS. I'm having the RNY Bypass and he is having the sleeve. His surgery is two weeks after mine but he origianlly had it scheduled for the day after mine. Hopefully having both of us do this will help keep each other motivated :) Good luck to you and your spouse!!!

I was forbidden to lift anything over 10 lbs for three full weeks after surgery.

Ambernamber when is your surgery? I'm thinking mine will be mid March.

They told me not to lift anything over 25lbs for 2 weeks, my little one is 24 lbs and they thought that would be ok as long as I'm not doing anything crazy with her. I'm more concerned about having the energy to keep up with her and help DH recover. She enrolled in a daycare, so I will be able to send her there whenever I need to.

Are there any driving restrictions post op?

I was told not to drive until after my second post-op appointment at 2 weeks and not until I was off pain meds.

My surgery is Tuesday, February 3rd. My fiance's surgery is Monday February 16th. As soon as I got the approval from my insurance the scheduling was really fast.

My doctor hasn't said anything about lifting restrictions (although I am sure it will come up in my pre-op) but he did mention that he personally does not have a driving restriction. Just as long as you are not on any narcotics and can perform the nesscary dutites it takes to drive (ie looking over you shoulder, wearing a seat belt) you can drive as soon as you are ready.

As for energy, my mom had the surgery about 14 years ago when my brother and I were around 8 and 4. She was worried too about not having the energy to help my dad take care of us. She found that as soon as she was feeling better that she had enough energy to take care of my brother and I (even more energy then before her surgery). So it all really depends on how you heal. It took my mom about a week or two before she could really get back into the swing of things.

I had my RNY on 12/23 and my husband had his on 12/30. We have 2 young daughters. I was fine to take care of my girls. I even went back to work the week my husband had his surgery. I was tired but manageable. I would recommend 2 weeks apart.

Well it has been going pretty well. My husband had list 55 lbs and I have lost 41. The mental part is difficult. I was prepared for the physical but not the mental aspect. I didn't realize how much I rely on food for comfort. I haven't found anything to replace that yet. I still feel like something is missing some days. That causes me some anxiety. Also, I have difficulty getting some foods down. However, I am still happy I made this decision. I am now off blood pressure medicine. I am on my to a healthier me. I have 77 more lbs to go. I can't wait to reach my goal. Just giving am honest answer.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
