Hi All!!

Have any of you gone through the surgery with your spouse? We are planning to have the surgery done on the same day. My biggest concern, which some of you, if not all, may think is really dumb, but I hate tht we won't be able to be there for eachother when the other comes out of surgery. I have asked to share a room, doctor has said that cannot happen. But I have heard you are up and walking around that same day, so we could visit eachother after the fact. What do you all think? Does it make sense to do it all together? The best part of it would be that we would be on the same diets together!! That will be extremely helpful to both of us.

Your thoughts are very much appreciated!!

Maria

I met a couple doing just that in my pre-op class. I don't know their names or anything, but she was going in at 8 am; he was the next appt on the same day (same surgeon) @ 10 am. They were really looking fwd to getting it done at the same time, going thru everything together, etc. They had adult children living in the same city who could help them if needed - that would be my biggest concern - if I needed help AND he needed help, you need someone who could help and drive you both to post-op classes, hospital, etc., if need be.

Thanks! Yes, we have two adult children who live with us, so we have someone to drive us to and from the hospital, as well as help around the house as needed. The doctor also said he has done couples before. I just wish we could share a room! :)

I think your concerns are valid. I would just be worried that if either one of you need help getting up etc that it would be difficult. On the other hand I think it's an awesome thing to do together.

My husband and I had sleeve surgery the same day. I was first, he was second. I woke up in the recovery room right around the time they wheeled him into the recovery room and put him right next to me. I stayed there for a few minutes until he woke up and then they had me get up and walk to my room. I was in my room for about 15 minutes when they had him get up and walk to his room, which was right next door to mine. I got up and walked into his room and we stayed together the rest of the day, getting up and walking together, trying different juices, everything was together. We left the hospital about 8 hours after surgery and a friend drove us home. We recovered side by side and have been each others partner through the whole process.

As of today, 4.5 months later, we've stayed within a few pounds of each other as far as amount lost. I'm at 85 pounds and he's at 81. I am so happy we did this and that we did it together. It's definitely been a challenge, but having him right there with me has been a major blessing.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask them or to pm me. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
