Recommended Posts

So my paperwork was submitted by my surgeons office on 01/06/2015 .. Insurance has confirmed that they have it ... still no response .. sooo frustrated! :( .

Has anyone had to wait this long? .. My surgeon always told me how great of an insurance this was and now ... silence for three weeks! <_<

I have BCBS (of TX) and I was approved for surgery. I feel like my process was super quick - from the first 'info' meeting, psych appt, nut appt, pre-op surgical visit, and surgery was about 2 months. The longest part of that, however, was indeed getting insurance approved. My dr's office told me from day 1 that insurance usually takes between 6-8 weeks to process, so my guess is that this time frame is "normal." Sorry it is frustrating, though! I highly recommend that you take this time to ground yourself. I don't know if that makes sense, but because I feel like my process was so fast, there was a point post-surgery where I was like "what the hell did I just do?" Also, I only had one week for the pre-op diet. Are you on that yet? But I only lost a couple of pounds during that period so I felt like I was "behind" everyone else post-op. I know that is stupid, of course. Everyone is different, there is no point in comparing yourself, etc., but that is where I was. Anyway, this was just my experience but I hope it helps give perspective. This is an incredible journey you're about to go on. Good luck!

Thanks for the pep talk :)

Im not recommended to start the pre op diet until three days prior to surgery. I have however started the diet three weeks ago for my own benefit. Im doing this so that I can get used to life "after" surgery. I didnt want to be in complete shock once the time arrived.

I've lost 10 pounds so far so hopefully Im doing something right :)

I was just wondering about the insurance wait time because I've seen in other posts that FEP BCBS is pretty quick and my surgeons office said max of two weeks for approval but this week is week # 3.

Sometimes I can be pretty impatient I guess but thats only because Im anxious and excited about all of this! :)

All in due time I guess :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
