Hello there,

It has been a while since my last question as I have been dealing with my ups and downs on post surgery and my struggles with what the heck to eat that doesn't look like vomit that took a spin in a blender. UGH.

I am 16 days post op. I can take liquids down just not as fast. Still struggling to hydrate and reach up to 64oz of Water (impossible right now) and still feeling my way around food but cannot eat solids yet. Still drinking the Protein shakes which I am so over about.

I have lost 15 pounds since my surgery. Weight from surgery is 253 and I am at 238 this morning. However, I have been 238 for a few days now. No changes. Apparently, there is some kind of stall going on. Not sure why, since I barely make it to 400 calories a day!

Anyone has insight on why the sudden weight loss stall? Obviously I am not over eating if I can barely make it to 400 calories, I am hydrating as much as I can, and I do my walks every day. At least 30 mins.

Sleeve veterans, please...do you know why?

I have my follow up with my surgeon tomorrow 1st time since the surgery.

at 16days post op worry a lot more about getting your Protein and fluids in than whatever the scale says. You're going to have stalls, but your body can't do the conversion of fat->glycogen->energy (and therefore weight loss) if you don't stay hydrated.

I hate to sound like a broken record, but I'm gonna repeat what your Doc's gonna say at your checkup......Don't worry about the stalls and stay focused on your long term goals. Keep doing what you're doing. The numbers will add up in the end. ;)

It was discouraging for a nano second there. I was one day 238, next day 239.5 I was flipping out. I was like WTH? I eat like a squirrel and sip Water all day long like a stinking hamster off of those Water bottles...(picture that) and I gain a pound? I know we fluctuate daily. I get that. But you know how it is, when you are so anxious to see the scale go down, and then you see the needle go the other way....kinda makes your hair stand up. :)

Let's see what the ol surg has to say tomorrow.

While you'll soon see much more weight loss.....you won't get rid of the stalls. Later on they will probably get longer too. You have to maintain your resolve and not let it get to you. I had one stall last over six weeks with no loss in weight. I would just exercise harder and concentrate more on meeting my daily intake. They eventually break and the weight keeps coming off. The sleeve has only one job......the rest is up to you. ;)

Having surgery turns some dieting concepts on their head. For dieting, theoretically at least, the less you eat the more you can lose. After surgery, if you take in less Protein than you need, your weight loss can stop. I've done best when I get at least the minimum of Protein and liquids.

Stop worrying about the stalls...you have a whole year to get to your goals...just keep drinking and the stalls will pass...

Its the Dreaded Three Week Stall (See? So common it even has a name!) Miss Mac says it best. Stalls are like lovers. Your first won't be your last.

I am almost 8 months out from RNY and have had my share of weight-loss stalls. Like everyone says, while frustrating, they do work themselves out in time, A bit of advice, I know this is hard to do early in the post-op phase, but my bariatric educator keeps reminding us that to lose weight, we must take in at least 800 calories per day. Otherwise our bodies go into "starvation" mode and hold on to the weight fearing it isn't going to get enough nourishment. Thus, to keep losing weight, we must try to take in at least 800 calories per day. She also said "plateaus" are normal, and the weight loss does pick up again after the plateau is over. Don't give up hope!!

@@wilbskinny Thank you for that info.....any information helps. I have been struggling to meet 400 calories. Nevermind making it to 800 calories. As soon as I can swallow real food, I hope to meet that goal. However right now, I can barely fit anything. The most is 2 ounces. If I am not drinking a Protein shake or Soup, I am drinking diet tea or Water. There is always something going in and filling that space in my stomach. I am going to ask the surgeon tomorrow when can I expect to eat a little more, have a little more space in there.......I want to meet the 800 calories. Believe me, I wish I can have a real meal in a minute! :)

Congratulations! You have reached The Dreaded Week-3 Stall. You just may have gotten there a little early. It's perfectly normal, and just about all of us have suffered through it. You're not crazy, and your doctor didn't screw up. In fact, you might not lose any weight for two weeks or even longer. But don't worry – after that, the weight will start falling off if you stick to your program. And, the inches will continue to come off even while the scale isn't budging. Here's a good article that explains why it happens and why we all have to go through it. Hang in there. Pretty soon it'll be in the rear-view mirror and you'll be dropping weight again!

(Apologies to BP regulars who have seen this repeatedly, but it's a big deal to those who are going through it!)

@@Rogofulm No need to apologize, it is worth repeating! When one is new and is struggling to see the numbers go down, we want to hear from the experts out there. The ones that have been through it. Sure, I can do a search in the forums, but it is nice to get responses from fresh new people, not stale conversations from a year ago.

I know it's very difficult in the beginning to meet all of the requirements--protein, fluids and calories. As time goes by, and you're allowed to increase your intake, you will lose weight quickly again. All the best!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
