Hungry All The Time....9 weeks post-op

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am 9 weeks post-op and am eating pretty much normal foods now. I try to stick to three small meals and two Snacks a day. I'm getting around 70 grams of Protein a day and am able to get all of my Water in. However, I find my self hungry all of the time. I can easily get 850-1000 calories in a day. Anyone this far out hungry all of the time? Any suggestions. I'm a little worried that old habits are going to start coming back.

I'm not hungry all the time, but I do get hungry at really odd times - like when I've just finished a meal! I would call your surgeon and see what they say. I know from my own experience that if I take in less than 900-1000 calories per day, my body stops losing weight and makes me very hungry - my doctor says my body gets confused and thinks I'm starving (literally). It happened when I went back in the hospital for a kidney infection. So I try to stay just above 1000 calories per day. This may not be what's happening to you, but it never hurts to call your doctor - they've seen everything!

I'm about 9 weeks out too and I find myself wanting to eat more, I can easily eat 1000 calories a day but I try not to pass 700 but I find myself always hungry (even when I eat 1000 calories) im worried that it's so easy to eat that many calories this soon

I'm 11 weeks out and am always hungry too I just drink Water but I also allow one cheat meal every other week. Don't deprive yourself because that'll cause failure in the long run. It'll be fine. Just talk to your surgeon and they'll suggest something.

I'm about 9 weeks out as well, I find that I am super hungry but when I actually get something to eat..I can only have 2-3 fork/spoons of it.

I'm not doing good with my fluids (water) but my NUT told me instead of eating perhaps it's my body telling me I am thirsty. Try drinking more Water..that might help. :P

Hungry people, have you been experiencing hunger, I mean the ferocious type - not the its been a while and I should eat something type, during your whole post op or has it been growing, or did it just change at some point? Are you eating any fat? I've never not been hungry unless I've just eaten a horse, but I've not had that ravenous wow id eat the cat type of hunger since surgery (admittedly a scant week ago but its still a first). I guess I'm wondering how long that honeymoon lasted for you.

Nice to see someone not hungry. I was starting to worry. I'm 11 days out and I hope I don't experience hunger for s while and when I do that 4oz will satisfy.

I don't get hungry much either. I only ever get hungry about halfway through a main meal (lunch or dinner). It's ferocious, but I'm already eating (I'm supposed to be eating) so it's bizarre but not an issue. Other than that, it's rare for me to get hungry. I almost always forget to have my morning snack, and my afternoon snack only happens because I am giving my preschooler a snack then. It's such a relief. It helps that I am CONSTANTLY drinking Water. I have to drink way more than 64oz because I have a kidney disorder, and I think it keeps my stomach to preoccupied to think about food (if it was going to do that at all).

Remember, when they removed 2/3 of our stomachs, they removed 2/3 of the hormone receptors (ghrelin) that were lying to our brains and saying we were hungry. Our brain isn't getting false messages anymore!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
