Has weight loss/surgery turned me crazy?

Recommended Posts

Ever since my surgery I have been short tempered. I've always been mild natured and it took a lot to make me angry. Now I seem to get angry all the time, go overboard in my reactions, talk and say things I don't mean and all of this leads to extreme guilt and emotional pain.

Counselor says I need to give myself a break as my body is in such a state of flux, but its easier said then done.

I do the same thing. My husband asked me several times yesterday what my problem was??? Why was I so irritable? It seems like everything gets on my nerves. I get so nervous I can't stand it. I get mad over the least little thing. At first I thought it was sugar withdraw.....don't know what it is now???

I can't speak for everyone, but I myself was sleeved 4 weeks ago today, and yes, I am very short tempered as of late, get offended very easily and lash out with something fierce. Not happy about it, idk if it's that our hormones are out of wack, or what, but it's definitely not cool.

Yeah I had it too for about two months but it went away, especially as the new me emerged. I'm happy I had enough strength to control my thoughts and didn't communicate them into words to my wife.

I was very irritable my first few weeks after my surgery however it seemed to fade away. It is a major lifestyle adjustment and took a while to accept that in my head ( as well as my body)

Do you all find you're eating really low fat? I noticed when I was doing a low fat, low carb diet that I became REALLY touchy and cranky. Once I added fat back in I felt much more like my normal easy going self again. Just a thought... not an expert or anything... ;)

I wanted to ask a question about low fat eating. My NUT says she is not so hung up on fat anymore, well on good fats like avocado and walnuts etc., and I've been wondering whether people have had more or less success when loosening the fat restrictions.

Also wondering if people have dealt with stalls with intermittent hi/lo tactics and whether they saw any success?

Your fat cells are full of hormones and as they break down those hormones are released back into your system. :) So they say it's basically like going through puberty all over again, that or for women like pregnancy, so be prepared to be all over the place for the first while during the process. It should level out as your body adjusts :)

My tolerance for a$$#0/3$ went down in direct proportion to my daily caloric intake.

Come to think of it, it's true that a few weeks after surgery I was quite cranky but who wouldn't be? You just had a major surgery, you're getting used to your new stomach your new habit, you're stressful most of the time because you're nervous that you might do everything wrong. You didn't get enough Protein, you didn't enough Water. then you hit stall, your hair started to fall, you didn't know how to join the big dinner, you're worried how to eat out with people, you didn't know how to tell people at work etc etc. It will pass when you're settled with all new things, you will gain more confidence and you will (eventually) be at peace.

Today I chatted briefly with a colleague, she was surprised with my transformation and asked how I did and I just simply told her tha "I had a surgery", just simpe as that. And she just replied, good for you! A couple of months ago I'd probably just smile and tell her I was on a diet but at this moment I feel more confident to tell people a simple truth.

I stil don't tell everyone though, but I am now more open about my surgery, I only tell who I feel like I want to, some of them (like this colleague) I'm not even close with. I just know that they're open-minded enough.

Hello!

The metabolic changes alone are beyond anything you can prepare for. Then there is that being safe (even if it is lonely or painful) and separated from people feeling you aren't even aware of until you and it start melting away. Then there are the issues that made the eating and morbid obesity acceptable life choices that want to come up and do the two step with your emotional equilibrium. Add on body and appearance issues, moving away from addictive eating behavior, sexuality and your responsibilities toward loved ones, work...

Cut yourself some serious slack. Just make it a point not to be mean and everyone else can just learn to generate a little understanding.

Peace

Absolutely I was very cranky for the first 6 weeks or so. My husband actually would say something and I would bite his head off. We laugh about it now because I am the complete opposite. I think it is all the changes plus for me it started during the pre op diet. It went away when I started consistently meeting my Protein and Water goals. And yes, I do eat plenty of good fats in my diet. I stay far away from any sweets whatsoever. I had such a huge problem with sweets prior to surgery and I am afraid if I let them back in, I will be in trouble again.

My boyfriend and I prepared for the possibility. I told him that if I get mean or unbearable, he should call my daughter and tell her he is sending me back! Thankfully, when I get upset, I tend to isolate myself rather than lash out. My bariatric physician doubled up on my Welbutrin, and that helped, too, by reducing my anxiety level.

I think there are several things happening. First, immediately after surgery, we are still healing and not eating much and really trying to focus on drinking our Water and eating Protein, etc. Then there are the hormones. But also, we used to (or some of us anyway) eat our feelings or eat when we were stressed, upset, etc. But now, we can't do that and we have to experience those feelings and we might not know exactly how to do that appropriately yet. It's a learning process!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
