Endoscopy -- what to expect

Recommended Posts

Can somone give me an idea of what to expect with the Endoscropy procedure? It is one of the pre-op things I have to do.

I understand thatt I will be drugged up & need a ride home. Will I be able to work later in the day or will I still be a little out of it?

it all depends how you deal with the sedatives. Some people are literally ok less than an hour later or almost fine coming out of the procedure. others take much longer. I did mine withno Sedatives at all...DONT DO THAT, unless you like gagging retching and burping on end while having a tube stuffed down your throat and saliva pour out of your mouth like a waterfall. its quite , fun. NOT. lol Good luck.

I had one back in 2011. They did the twilight sleep and either they didn't give me enough or it just didn't work because I was painfully aware of every moment. It was, for me, the worst procedure I've ever had done, and that includes a colonoscopy.

But, and it's a big butt, based on testimonies I've read from many people here I understand it's now being routinely done with full sedation. So I don't think you have anything to worry about.

If I were you though I'd asked about what form of sedation they use beforehand, and if they don't offer full sedation I would insist on it.

Again, this was just my own personal experience. I know there are many who have said it's a walk in the park.

Good luck!

I hate hate hate IV's , I had no problem starting lines on other people , but not on me. My sister was or is an ER nurse and one time when i ws in the er they tried to start a line and this nurse just kept jabbing at me like i was a wayward pork chop. finally she stuck me hard, i yelped and over the course of the next 1/2 hour my hand turned into a football. She had jabbed me in a nerve bundle and when i got to my floor the IV was sticking straight up out of my hand. causing the nurses on the floor to gasp, and rip it out replacing it, and after 11 tries they got another line in.

But my hands were black and blue for two weeks. It turns out the nurse who first screwed up, hated my sister and exacted revenge through me. I got a written letter of apology for that from the director of nursing. But the second was i went in for my shoulder surgery and the anesthesiologist was brand new and shadowing a really establish anesthesiologist, so she tried 18 times to get a line, the one she got in was on the side of my hand and i screamed like a baby.

Wow did that hurt. so as a result i hate IV's so when i went for the endo, i mentioned how much i hated them and my blood pressure shot up so the nurse said, "well we don't have to sedate you , you can do it without the sedation". So i agreed

the rest is history. lol

When they put me under, it was literally like I blinked my eyes closed and open them again. It seemed to go that quick. Other than a little scratchiness in my throat - which I wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't been expecting it, everything went fine. I could have driven myself home if I had to. In 2 hours, it was like it never happened.

Same here. Easy peasy. Didn't even have a scratchy throat. Went to the diner for a really nice Breakfast afterwards ☺️

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
