Homeopathy/Naturopathy to help with surgery?

Recommended Posts

I am VERY early on in the process, so in some senses this is premature. But I figure if I can collect ideas here now, I will have time to do my own research AND get the products I decide on before I actually need them. (Being on Disability, I have a VERY tight budget so will probably only be able to get one item per month sort of thing.)

There are a couple of topics in various other places on Bariatric Pal, and I found a couple of web sites that give general pre-op suggestions for surgery.

What I've come up with so far is Aconitum, Arnica, and Ferrum phos for 2-3 days before surgery. Also loading up on Vitamins A and C along with the mineral Zinc.

Has anybody heard of any of these? More importantly, does anyone have first hand information from taking any of them before your surgery?

Talk to your surgeon about any and all supplements (including homeopaths) you want to take. A lot of them can be contraindicated prior to surgery due to increased chance of bleeding or interference with meds they may administer in the hospital.

I am a vet tech and actually had a client kill their dog by administering arnica after a simple lump removal surgery. She didn't tell us she was giving it and she ended up giving about 200x more than the recommended dose, thinking it would be a good anti inflammatory. The arnica in conjunction with the injectable NSAID we had already given caused severe ulcers which perforated the stomach. By the time she told us what she was doing (5 days postop) the damage was done and there was nothing we could do.

I would recommend putting those funds aside somewhere, rather than buying up things that you might need. I wasn't advised to take any supplements pre-surgery. And I've never been advised to take anything other than a Multivitamin, B12, and Calcium. I've tried different supplements and "super foods" but never felt like they made a significant difference in the way I felt or in my health.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
