This surgery feels like a big mistake.

Recommended Posts

I had the worse time of it for the first 4 - 5 weeks. I was so frustrated and upset. Nothing tasted good, nothing sat right on my stomach and everything made me sick. I too started regretting the surgery and thinking that I had made a mistake. I could barely eat 350 calories a day. And then my doctor added back in my Zofran and a ppi and slowly but surely I was a able to eat a wider variety of food. Now at 6 months out things are so much better for me. I still only eat between 900 and 1,000 calories a day but I'm satisfied with what I do eat. It really does get better. Give it time.

@@Chele Martines - sounds like you are eating too fast and getting either a case of stacking (that stuck feeling in the esophagus) or the foamies (too much saliva/phelgm). We have to eat super duper slow and chew really well. Especially early on. When you don't the food doesn't digest and "stacks" in your esophagus or it goes down too fast and displaces the saliva in your belly.

Some have found success using the Eat Slower app. You can try taking one tiny bite, chewing until it dissolves, eating 2 minutes the repeat. Also remember to keep at least a 30 minute window on your eating and drinking.

Also try playing around with the time of day you take your prilosec. I tended to get acid in the evenings so taking my omeprzole around 2 -3 pm made a difference for me.

I think you are correct. I think I am eating to fast and possibly not chewing my food thoroughly. I am always in such a hurry. I will slow down.

Is this a phone app? I will look it up - Thanks!

I take mine at dinner now. Before surgery I took it at bedtime. Immediately after surgery I took it in the morning but I was having terrible reflux at night so my doctor told me to take it around dinner to see how I did. So far so good.

Thank you everyone!

Chele

I thought the same thing. You are very early in the process. It will get better as time goes on. Let yourself heal.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
