Diverticulitis is an infection in the colon that causes little pockets to swell up, it makes it hard, or impossible to poop. Requires antibiotics that are really nasty, and hard on the body. :( My mom gets it if she doesn't eat right, including getting enough Fiber in.

Prior to my sleeve on 12/23/2013, I had chronic diverticulitis for years. I was not constipated though. I had a lot of abdominal pain and diarrhea attacks several times a month. A month before my sleeve I was in the hospital for eight days with ischemic colitis and nearly had to have a section, but the meds finally kicked in and I was able to go home intact.

Two weeks later I was allowed to start my pre-op liquid diet and proceeded with the sleeve surgery. I am over 13 months out and have not had even one episode of diverticulitis or any other colon issue.

Two years before my sleeve surgery I had 3 hospitalizations for diverticulitis and I had a colon resection Sept 2012. It is no laughing matter and I am hope you are feeling better! If you have any questions please feel free to ask me.

I had an attack of diverticulitis the past August (2014). I knew I had diverticulosis - those pockets in your colon - due to having had 2 colonoscopies. I was sent to the ER where they diagnosed the inflammation/infection and a couple of weeks later I saw my PCP and told her and she asked what I might have eaten and I said a few days prior I had popcorn. She said about 50% of her patients who have this have eaten popcorn. She told me to stay away from corn, popcorn and seeds and nuts. There is conflicting data and opinions about food being the cause of these infections, though, with some saying it is not the cause.

But you are right, those antibiotics are nasty. If you have to take them again, use the probiotic called florastor. Antibiotics don't kill it.

Miss Mac - so glad and encouraged to hear that your surgery seems to have cured your problem.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
