Severe Constipation: Advice Please

Recommended Posts

Stool softeners should be a last resort as they can mess up the gut flora that is essential in metabolism and immunity.

Fat. Eat more fat. And when you've thought you've eaten too much eat a little more. Avocados. Real Butter. Real Cream. Bacon. Just eat it!

Stop counting calories! You malabsorb fat so when you don't get enough, you get constipated. You need to lube the machine.

I can't agree more! Counting calories for a DSer is useless. You lose weight because that's how the tool works.

Absorbing no more than 20% of Fats

About 40% of Protein and the same for complex carbs.

The fat that you don't absorb keeps the intestines lubricated. You may have loose stool a few times till you get the quantity right for your body but Constipation can be severe if you don't eat enough fat.

Adding Fiber does really work well for the DS. Fat is more effective.

Two tablespoons of mineral oil every night before bed has been a life-saver for me! My sister recommended me trying it after hearing me complain. Mineral oil is prescribed for her 9 year old grandson who has severe Constipation issues and it has been working for him. It works great and is very cheap.

Best of luck,

Carol

laxatives are not a long-term solution for a DS patient. Increased fat consumption is the only answer.

I know y'all are just trying to be helpful but the DS is different than all other WLS and you're non DS advice can be harmful. The though is nice but dangerou .

I increased my fat intake above 100 grams. Hopefully this will get things moving.

I took everyone's advice and checked out the Facebook groups and re-evaluated my diet plans based on veterans of the surgery. Yesterday I finished with 148 grams of fat, 110 grams of Protein, and 21 carbs. I have not been to the bathroom yet, but I can say there is a lot of activity in there this morning! Thanks again for all the advice

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
