Surgery scheduled with second thoughts

Recommended Posts

I have my ds surgery scheduled Feb 20th, It will be at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania with Dr Anthony Peterick. Has anyone had surgery preformed by him? Anyone had surgery at Geisinger? When I finally saw him after the 6 months of nutrition classes, support groups & surgery classes he was very nice and talked through the procedure with me then at the end he dropped the sadi-s loop bomb on me. Not what I wanted. I don't know why but I just said okay. Well about 2 days later after I had been stewing over this I called his office back to tell them I would not be having surgery there and spoke to one of the nurses who assured me that if I explain to him I want the traditional ds he will do it and has done them. I hate to admit it but I'm having 2nd thoughts about my hospital and surgeon. Anyone else been in my shoes? Advise? Did you move forward with the procedure anyway or axe the hospital / surgeon and move on? Thanks!

I had nervous thoughts about my DS, but I didn't have second thoughts. I think if you are really apprehensive, talk to the doctor about having it the way you want it... And if you still feel iffy.. Don't have the surgery. It is your body. Do (or don't do) the surgery that's right for you.

Speak up with him and be direct. But also find out why he thinks it is better. Find out what the differences are, etc. But speak up. It's ok.

Thanks for the advise, I am going to talk to him a little more when I go back for pre op testing and voice my concerns to him a d go from there. The worst that could happen is I could end up with a different surgeon at a different facility at a later date =)

Research and find another surgeon that does the DS. My first surgeon told me to stay home and have the sleeve. Naw! Wasn't an option. Find someone else. He probably has never done the DS before.

You are lucky. I had 2 days of liquids; although that isn't as tough as some other DSers who go for weeks on liquids or milk.

I'm so lucky!! I'm allowed a reg breakfast day before...then clear liquids for rest of day... So I can pig out till afternoon before surgery!!!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
