Transition to Regular Foods: What's the first thing you tried?

Recommended Posts

Next Friday I have my follow up appointment with my surgeon, dietitian and exercise specialist. At this appointment I am supposed to be cleared to return to "regular" foods (at my own pace I assume) and cleared for strength training/no limitations when exercising.

So, my question(s) is(are):

What is the first thing you tried when you were cleared for "normal" foods again after the soft foods stage? How did it go?

There are things I am looking forward to trying. I really want to try sushi (without rice) but I'm afraid that might be a while. My favorite sushi roll as of late (the past year or so) has been a skinny (no-rice) "rock n' roll" -- seaweed wrapped around avocado and cooked eel with a little bit of eel sauce.

I am terrified to try bread/rice/pasta/potatoes/etc.! Part of me never wants to try it! I am not a huge carb fanatic actually, never have been. But one of the first foods I thought about after surgery was a grilled cheese sandwich. Maybe that's just because I was eating so much Soup and broth!

Is it sad that I don't even remember what my first "solid" food was and it was only a few months ago? I do remember counting the days until I was allowed ground meats and legumes, because I planned to stop at Wendy's and get a chili. That's exactly what I did and it was delicious, but I was pretty shocked I couldn't even manage to eat half a small chili without feeling like I would burst.

i stopped for indian food on the wy home from my clearance visit. chcken vindaloo yum, nice easy chunks of stewed chicken in sauce with some very soft vegetables. That was my first real food, was excellent. i ust got cleared for all foods the ther day and i had a square of pizza about 1 inch by 1 inch, basically a bite as a celebration, then felt guilty about it lol. but it was the taste i was after and i tasted great lol.

I had saved some ham from Christmas, and I ate that. It wasn't until the next day I found out that it's on the "do not attempt" list for the soft diet... It turned out fine. I haven't had a food that I haven't tolerated. I've eaten chicken, pot roast, cheese, turkey meatballs, and lots of fish. It's all been quite good. I tried a Protein bar last night, and I think that was the most difficult thing I've tried so far, it didn't hurt, but it didn't feel normal, so I will wait a while before I try that again.

Whatever you pick chew lots and eat slow. Enjoy!

I lived off of Soups for months. I started out while I was on liquids.....watering down instant potatoes to make a potato soup....I know it was empty calories but it was so good. You can thin down refired Beans and add cheese...this is one of the first meals a lot of patients eat. It took me several months to be able to eat anything and that is why I relied on Soups. I ate a lot of Wendy's chili (and still do). I did learn everything I eat has to be real moist and usually with some kind of sauce or gravy or I can't eat it. Rice and broccoli will not go down and comes back up after it has mutiplied 10X....LOL

i don't remember what my first real food was but I can say that I still drink Protein drinks, eat scrambled eggs and a lot of cheese and greek yogurt. Im about 4 months out now and there are still some things I just cant tolerate any more. Mostly its heavier and denser foods/meats.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
