Salads and dressings?

Recommended Posts

I'm getting the sleeve sometime in late February and was wondering how everyone does with lettuce/leaf spinach for salads? I've been reading mixed reviews.

I'm an on/off low carber so I typically use full fat Caeser dressing and am looking to stock up (there's a really good sale right now) but I'm unsure if that's the dressing I should get or if I should use light post-op?

Any help is appreciated!! :)

My nutritionist recommends that I use the fork method when eating salad and he doesn't care about the type of Salad Dressing because you consume so little with this method. You've probably seen folks doing this in restaraunts, but all you do is dip your fork in the little container of dressing, them spear the salad. You get the right amount of salad dressing on every bite. This method works great and I don't miss "blessing" my salad with dressing and I can eat what're dressing I like.

wow i just got my 6 week clearance and was only now allowed to eat lettuce and only in very small quantities. I don't know of anyone who eats salads post op for a while as its not Protein. remember Proteins first then other calories if you have to. My personal journey is different but ask your nutritionist as lettuce is hard to digest well actually cellulose is indigestible but its heavy Fiber and that can make for some interesting sleeve problems. I am told.

I just got cleared to have about 5 or 6 small pieces of lettuce or about 1 full lettuce leaf to try for a few weeks, but again i dont know where I would possibly fit a salad into my food plan, and I love salad. you eat such small portions 1 bottle of Salad Dressing would last me about a year at this point. You may want to rethink about how much you will get to eat after surgery. You do know for the first 3 to 4 months depending on surgeon you could have as little as 1/4 cup of food for a meal after your liquid phase, right?

Yeah, I'm not the only one who uses it, so it wouldn't go to waste regardless, but what you are saying makes sense about the protein, I wasn't thinking of that. Thanks!

I eat salad all the time, usually add some Protein to it.

As for salad dressings, sometimes things high in sugar/fat may bother your stomach.

Don't be surprised either if your taste changes. Things I used to really like, no longer appeal to me. Even 2+yrs later I still come across things that just don't taste good, even though they sound/smell amazing!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
