In my post op room and struggling bad

Recommended Posts

The pain is bad. I'll get rid of gas pains and then new ones come. What causes the new ones. Also a couple surgery holes kill and my stomach is extremely sore. Can't lay down comfortably. Very hard to get liquids down..

Hey, squeaky wheel gets the grease..........Speak up! They got wicked pain meds they can give you.....no need to endure the pain needlessly. Tell them the pain is a "10" and you want stronger meds. Keep in mind, once they give you something weaker and it doesn't work, they can't give you more until later......so know what they're giving you and request more effective meds. (ie: morphine, dilaudid etc.)

And as far as the gas pains.......maybe some Gas-X might help, but as everyone is saying, walking is the most effective method of elimination and relief. Try to get some sleep too.....makes the time go by faster.....and time is the only real healer. It'll be behind you in no time.....hang in there. ;)

Be mindful of taking in air when you drink. Walk walk walk ;-) take deep calming breaths to help relax your self and allow full blood flow to your body. Also I asked for ice packs for my incisions they worked wonders.

Thank you so much for the help. I'm an idiot I guess. How do you sip without taking air in? Is there a way you could explain. Do gas x or mylicon drops work? They are sending mylicon drops up

Tell 'em to give you anti-nausea meds. Also surely they have you on IV fluids so skip the drinking and ask for ice chips and a sponge on a stick to moisten your dry lips without drinking. ;)

Yes on IV. But they want you to drink 1 ounce of Fluid every 15 minutes all day before they will release you to go home.

Have them give you something for nausea with higher pain meds. Everyone reacts different to the pain. After the first day, my RN suggested that i try toradol between my pain meds. It is an antinflammatory that i was able to take every 6 hours. i do not know why it worked(not a DR), but everytime i was given it for some reason it help with the gas. Good luck with it. And like everyone said, walk. It does help. My doctor had to tell me to slow down.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
