Risk of getting a hernia?!?!

Recommended Posts

I had my one week post op appointment today and the PA and my surgeon kind of scared me. They stressed the not lifting or pushing anything over 7lb. They also told me to use the elevator instead of stairs, and no walking my dogs no matter how small they are. They said basically anything that involves use of the stomach muscles because it could cause a hernia. They told me at least until they clear me for regular exercise which is in three weeks. Was anyone told any of this or are they just being extra precautious? Thanks for any input and comments.

My surgeon did an extensive hernia repair on me when he did my VSG, so....guideline were: 2 weeks no exercise, walking as tolerated only and very light housework, no bending, lifting, twisting, pushing, pulling over 20 pounds. 2nd-4th weeks no lifting over 20 pounds and aerobics only. No weight training, strength training intensive workouts until after one month follow up.

After my surgery I could do mostly just walking. No lifting anything over 10 pounds and no stomach crunches. I could do any type of walking. But in reality, I didn't want to do to much after surgery because it took too much energy. I had to let my body tell me what to do.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
