Exercise with Vertigo?

Recommended Posts

I need suggestions please!!! I've been banded since 12/19/13 and lost 89lbs so far. The past few months I've been struggling with weight loss because I can't go to the gym anymore because of severe vertigo. My surroundings seem to spin around me when I am sitting/standing perfectly still. The vertigo is due to rhinitis and my sinuses are usually blocked around this time of year when Molds are high in Texas.

I'm hoping you have suggestions as to what exercises I can do that don't require me to move my head a lot. I tried doing squats yesterday and that seemed okay as long as I use a chair for balance. I usually walk on the treadmill when I'm at the gym but I can barely walk in a straight line right now and I don't want others to see me stumbling around like a drunk so I'd like to exercise in the comfort of my own home until my vertigo goes away. ????

I have BPPV - a chronic vertigo condition. I also have severe sinusitis. I take Zyrtec_D year round. It never truly goes away, but a few things make it manageable. I have to stay on top of my sinus condition. When things get really bad I also use flonase nasal spray along with the Zyrtec-D. I take D3. Some studies seem to think that the symptoms of mild cases of vertigo can be alleviated with Vitamin D. I am also very careful on how I move my head. Especially when the vertigo is bad. Of course there are days when I simply have to sit still. On those days the best I can do is use some hand weights and do light reps.

I find it best not to fight the vertigo. See an ENT for something to help clear up the sinuses.

Thanks BLERDgirl! I saw an ENT and he wasn't very helpful but a friend at work just gave me her ENTs info and I've made an appt to see her. I also went and saw an Allergist Tuesday to help with my Mold and Pollen sensitivity. I'm also taking Fluticasone spray and Zyrtec daily. I'm thinking my sinuses are blocked again so they'll probably have me do a CAT scan and go from there. I feel your struggle girl! Vertigo is no joke. But I do kind of enjoy being chauffeured around. Lol

This is a tough one. My latent vertigo is actually exacerbated by the treadmill (disturbs my inner ear once I stop it) so I cycle or use an elliptical. When I'm feeling unstable, the pool is safer for me, except for the "getting in and getting out part" since looking at the moving Water can be unsettling. But once I'm in, it's fine. Would Water aerobics be something you could do?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
