Surgery scheduled June 22 in Olympia Wa

Recommended Posts

Hi There

This is my first time on this site. My lapband surgery is scheduled for

June with Dr Neal and I'm so excited. I weigh 230lbs and I am 5'5. I carry my weight very well and people around me incl. my OBGYN think I'm "not big enough" for this surgery. I have wanted Bariatric surgery for 10 years . My insurance denied me until this year when I was diagnosed with type II Diabetes. Isn't it sad that you have to wait until your health get's really bad, when this could have been prevented earlier... Anyway is there anyone who had surgery with Dr Neall ? Also, how does one NOT get dehydrated the first weeks after surgery, when you can only drink 2 tablespoons at one time...

Hope someone will write to me...

Josie

Hi Josie from Central WA.

I didn't have Dr Neal, but have heard good things about him.

The two tablespoons is a new one on me. I ate ice shavings and drank that sugar free stuff that tastes like Tang (Yuck) by the medicine cup (they keep track of your intake) immediately after surgery. You will be sipping Water until the swelling goes down.

Good luck!

Bruce

Hi BonJosie - I'm new to this site too. I agree about ins co's making people wait for the surgery. I have to do a 6 month weight loss program for them, when all they would have to do is look at my medical records of continual weight gain-weight loss since age 10. But I'll do what it takes to get this done!!

Good Luck on your journey!!

Hi: I am also new to this site and am having my surgery on June 22nd. I have 45 pounds to lose - may not seem like much to some, but I have been struggling with my weight my whole life. Every year it is another 5 to 7 pounds. I am nervous and very scared but at the same time very excited - I can't wait to lose weight and keep it off!!!

What sort of pre-op diet are you supposed to go on? I have been give a three day diet of low fat cottage cheese and sugar free yogurt. I found over the weekend I was eating everything in site. I keep on thinking "I won't be able to eat that soon, so I might as well have it now", at this rate I will need to lose 65 pounds by June 22nd.

Best of luck to you, imagine how great we are going to look this New Years Eve - I can't wait!!!

Hi Lexy
it's kind of strange but my Dr. (Dr. Neal) doesn't put his patients on any pre op diet. He is very strict about post op dieting i.e. 6 weeks on liquids. I know he trained under Dr. Ortiz in Mexico and Dr. Ortiz requires Protein liqiud diet for 2 weeks pre op. He claims, that "shrinks" the liver, but my best girlfriend who is an anesthesiologist claims there is no such thing. I will try not to overindulge until June 22nd and I think I'll be okay. I haven't been eating more or less than usual. What will be so hard for me post op is no more diet coke. I live on that...Also I like to have a margarita or cosmo and I'm not sure how that will go...
Josie

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
