How upfront was your surgeon about a goal weight?

Recommended Posts

My surgeon and my dietitian have not talked about goal weight at all. Not a peep. I set my personal goal weight based on what is considered a healthy BMI for my height. I'm 5'7.5"

my surgeon never mentioned a word about any numbers! he doesnt focus on certain numbers. neither did the nurse. the nurse simply asked me if I had a number in mind I said no not really. I'll no when I get there!

My surgeon didn't really specify, but like others said I'd lose around 60 percent of my weight. I feel like I'm not losing as quickly as I should, and I'm nearly a year out. I'm in another stall, but I know this one is entirely my fault. I've gotten into the habit of "grazing" and can't seem to stop.

My doctor set a goal that I found demotivating and disappointing. I set my own goals to keep me motivated and focused.

My surgeon asked me about my goal weight at our initial consult. I told him I didn't really have one and wasn't sure what I should expect to achieve. He showed me the weight range that would be normal for my BMI and asked what I thought. I said I thought those numbers sounded insane and can't even remember the last time I weighed anything in that range. First year of high school, maybe. That was the last we discussed it.

I know he wrote down something for a goal weight in their records to include in their success/failure stats, but I really don't care what it is and it doesn't affect my own goals. I really don't even have a goal weight. I caved in and named "150" for a goal so I could have a little ticker on my posts here, but I really don't care what number I hit. Maybe I'll reassess once I'm nearing 150. But right now I just want to be healthy and I want my body to DO the things I can't now (run, skip, jump, dance, ride), and beyond that I'm happy.

You'll get there. Just follow the program your Doctor outlined and be true to yourself and it will come. It just takes time and a lot of patience.

I was given the maximum pounds that would put me in the "normal" weight BMI. (127-128).It falls between the two. Personally, at five feet tall, I'd like to weigh less. But, that's my first goal. I'm seven weeks out from RNY and hit 30% of my excess weight off as of today.

That sunglasses guy keeps popping up in my posts. That was supposed to say 127-128.

I am 5'6" and started at 291 pre surgery, Feb 2013. I weigh between 155 and 158, depending on the day. My surgeon suggested I aim for 150-155 which is less than I weighed in high school 40 years ago. I am happy where I am-- comfortably in a size 12. Now to maintain.

My surgeon on my first meeting went over my history and adamantly told me I would get down to 140 lbs., I was 266 lbs. at the time. I was shocked because I thought I would be happy at 165 lbs. which is what I weighed when I met my husband more than 24 years ago. But he was so right, I hit 140 and have now maintained for over a year, I go between 140-143 and feel great!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
