Questions re STD post-op

Recommended Posts

What if I can't go back to work straight away? AND I am a self-pay with a WLS exclusion in company's health plan. The company used to cover WLS, and several of my coworkers got 6 wks STD off after their GB, but I am self-pay so I'm using my own vacation time. But what if I can't go back to work 3 or 4 days later... what if I'm still having trouble 2 wks later? After 5 days of sick time it turns into short term disability, but I think the company will exclude it since it would be WLS related?!??

So is there any legitimate health issue that I could qualify for, that wouldn't necessarily be chalked up to WLS?

I'm having second thoughts about my op on 5-31 now, because I don't want to risk my job if I can't come back to work in less than 5 business days.

Sorry if I'm not making sense... mini panic attack here.... !!!

Well, they may not have to pay you but they cannot fire you due to a medical illness or complication. It's against the law because of the Family Medical Leave Act. Read this....

I agree with Mandy, the Family act should protect your position if you have a larger compamy with 50 associates or more in a 25 mile radius (or something like that)

It is against the law, and they have to save your position, or hold one of equal pay, equal status, etc. for you. Check into it, but you should be ok. A lot of people have gone back after 3 or 4 days with no problems, as long as it's not a physical job.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
