OMG - It's Back!

Recommended Posts

Hello! I had surgery on 10/7/14 and have lost 50 lbs to date. Yeah hurray!. However, after being in menopause for at least 3 years, I found I've started my period again :( I'm only 51 yet wondering if I could really be getting my period back again and, if so, should I worry about pregnancy?

Has anyone else got their period back after being post-menopausal?

You don't need a period to get pregnant, you just need to ovulate. Hormones are stored in fat, so you are releasing enough hormones to have a period. The question is, are you releasing enough hormones to ovulate? I would make an appointment with my doctor.

At 51 you probably do not need to worry about ovulation or pregnancy. I would see your doctor though because while generally a period after major weight loss may be nothing, after you have been post-menopausal for three years it could also be a sign of another issue. Better to check it out than wonder about it. :)

This is one of my biggest fears about wls! I soooo don't want my period to return. I told my gyn at my last visit that I was going for wls and told her I was afraid of having my period came back. She said it was impossible. Yet then I hear of it happening......nooooooooo!

So far, the result seems to be unknown but leaning towards out of control hormones. However, I haven't had another period (yet).

Since I got it back in January, I've had exams, sonogram, several different blood tests, and uterine lining biopsy - all okay - no cancer or anything like that. Did see some weird lab results that would indicate some hormones are still playing havoc on me.

I had removed some hormone pellet remnants along with dead fat lump where they were injected last month with outpatient surgery,. I'm having seromas and hematomas from that so I have a big bump on my butt. The doctor aspirated it today and got out 50 cc of Fluid but still a bump at the incision site.

Doctor wants me to redo labs in 6 months to see how the hormones are behaving. So I'll be waiting to see if I get another period or it was a fluke.

Thanks for asking.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
