Hi all!

For those of you who have hypothyroidism like me, post surgery, have you visited your endocrinologist & had a change to your meds?

Have you stopped taking them, or got a lower dosage?

Thanks!

Morning.

I am on thyroid meds for Hypothyroidism. My strength has changed, it went to a lower dosage. I am happy, but I know that I will never be off this medication. It is okay if this is the only medication I have to continue to take.

I don't have a thyroid due to cancer so I'm definitely hypo. When I was at 286, I was on 200 mcg of synthroid. At 240 I was placed on 175mcg. Just last week at 208, I was placed on 150mcg.

What I do is call my endocrinologist, leave a message with the nurse, stating my current weight and whether or not I need an adjustment. The Dr. Calls me to say go to the labs and get the bloodwork done, then based on the results decides whether to change my meds. It is not always immediate based on the weight loss alone. The Dr said it takes awhile for the body to adjust so they wait until lab results to determine if it's time to lower the dose.

It will not happen for those of us without a thyroid.

No change in dosage yet and I'm 14 months post-op. Both PCP and surgeon suggested not coming off of them - I have nodules that have stopped growing while on medication and they didn't want to run the risk of them growing again.

That is interesting. Are you hypo? I've never heard of taking thyroid meds solely because of nodules. Nodules in and of themselves are not bad and they grow so slowly (years). If they get large enough, a fine needle biopsy is done and most of the time turn out benign. There is cardiovascular danger to taking too much thyroid medication...particularly if the person is not hypo.

23 months post op, lost 136 lbs and no change in my synthroid dose- 88mcg. I get my blood checked every 6 months-- no change.

@@mariatanner In my case, I had no trouble with swallowing the pill immediately after surgery. It's really tiny :). And not everyone has trouble swallowing after surgery.

I had RNY 2 years ago and lost 135 lbs. It was no slow but sustained. I still take my sun thyroid every morning and get my thyroid levels checked every 6 months.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
