Employer FMLA / Short Term Disability

Recommended Posts

It's the first month of a new year and I am ready to move forward with the Sleeve surgery. I've met with my surgeon, got my list of to-do's and have prepared myself for the self pay due to a lower BMI. As I was reading up on my employer's leave policy, I was shocked to learn that if I go on Short Term Leave, It will take all but 3 of my PTO days! This means I will have to go the next 11 months with only 3 available pto days :o There is no way I can manage this! I was really hoping to get my new year started off right with the surgery but man is this throwing a wrench in my plans!

Yes short term disability only kicks in after you have used up sick time. The downside of having PTO instead of sick/vacation/personal days is it then views all of it that way. Think about how your body works. I had a really easy surgical process. I could easily have gone back to work after a week off. My doctor advises his patients to take at least 2 weeks off.

It's the same where I work, too. Before STD kicks in, they take 40 hours (full work week) and then I get the benefits started the following week.

My job is pretty strenuous. One of my coworkers actually had the sleeve mid December and came back after 2 weeks and now says it was too soon. She's having a lot of issues though. I guess my only real option is to.....sigh.....wait.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
