Question about hospital stay?

Recommended Posts

I'm having my surgery on an outpatient basis. My surgery is at 1030am and I will be discharged 4-6 after surgery. Has anyone else had the sleeve performed as outpatient??

I went in as outpatient, but then I stayed for observation (2nd day) because they want to make sure no leaks and all is okay. Third day by 10am I was out. Insurance don't pay for discharge days, so they want to get you out as soon as they can. So I guess, outpatient procedure (1 day) with one day of observation (2nd day).

Every surgeon is different.

Yes I had outpatient surgery went in at 7:00 out by 3 or 4 was walking the hallways before that. Had to stay in a hotel near surgery center overnight then back for a check in the morning then went home. Not bad at all.

I was outpatient. In at 10 am and out the next day. I did the overnight. Was a 23 hour stay. That's outpatient. Even overnight

@@joleno i had mine done outpatient in a surgery center. I had to be there around 830, surgery around 1030, was in recovery until 4 ish. During that time they make sure you can pee, drink x amount of Water and can walk around. Then I was discharged home same day.

Do any of you think you could have benefited from an extra day in the hospital? It's procedure for my hospital to keep you 2-3 days. They make you walk, take the drains out before you are discharged, make sure you don't have leaks, and you can't go if you can't get 4 oz down in an hour. And you have to have a Protein shake before you leave too.

@@laurenella82 I agree. People should stay at least 2 days, first day of and second day for observation. This is a major surgery whether some people are superwoman/man or not.

From a health professional stand point, it sure is a high risk to mal practice if a patient is sent home after major surgery just a few hours of it being done. But hey...what do I know?

@@Pac-woman Agreed! I was scared reading these posts saying people had the surgery as outpatient until I went to my orientation last week. When she explained that they do all they can to prevent complications after the fact and I actually saw people who had surgery the day before walking around looking like they had never had surgery my mind was at ease. Doing this outpatient is a scary thought to me. I go in on a Tuesday and I will be discharged on that Thursday granted I can get in all the fluids. If I can't I will go home Friday!

@@laurenella82 Yes, I love how my surgeon handles things. I was prepped at 8am and surgery 10:30am. Then I was in recovery all day with my wonderful pain pump. :) The second day they had me on IV bags and alternate them with Vitamin IV bags. (I am set for a month, don't start Vitamins till the 12th of Feb). I did liquids on my third day before they discharged me. My 4th day home was beginning of pureed foods if I can handle. Went home with a script for percocet and pepcid. I see him in 2 weeks which will be the 28th. Mandatory ambulatory when I am home, they want us to walk as much as we can handle. So far, I have lost 10 pounds from the surgery and I feel good, no headaches whatsoever, considering I can barely make it to 300 calories a day. Everyday is a little better.

I'm having mine next week in an outpatient facility in Cincinnati Ohio. They keep you most of day but send you home that evening. I'm just nervous!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
