rdelly01 25 Posted January 17, 2015 So I'm 7 weeks post op, I was told to eat 55 to 75g of Protein (I'm guessing based on my body type) My question is... Is eating over 75g of Protein going to make me gain weight? I'm still eating several small meals every few hours and under 1,000 calories a day. But most of my meals are protein based, for example today based on my fitness pal I had 900 calories and 100g of protein. Am I doing this wrong ?!

Weight gain or loss also depends on the other micro-nutrients. How many carbs are you eating. Are they simple or complex carbs? How much sodium are you getting a day? How much sugar? Other factors: Are you drinking 64 ounces of fluids, mostly Water? Are you exercising?
speechsteff 2 Posted January 17, 2015 We were just told in our pre-open nutrition class that Protein needs are based on your height. I'm 5'2 and my range was around 55. They emphasized not going over your protein goal too much because it is hard on your kidneys. I had never heard about this before!

speechsteff 2 Posted January 17, 2015 I just got out my paperwork. At 5'3 your range should be 52-57 grams of Protein. It says "excess protein is not advised and can lead to kidney failure, liver failure and Calcium loss from bones. You are also at greater risk for dehydration because it takes a tremendous amount of Water to breakdown protein" Isn't it interesting how all programs are different? Our bodies are in a form of ketosis which in the long term can indeed harm your kidney's. However it's my understanding that the amount of protein required to do so which need to be an extremely high range over n extended period of time. It's also why the doctor's monitor our protein levels as part of our periodic bloodwork. Edited January 17, 2015 by BLERDgirl
blondebomb 580 Posted January 17, 2015 yep everyones protocol is differ...our preop classes was women..60 an men 70. an not to eat over 40 per meal it cant be used. we do stay in ketosis thats how the fat burns off. I am 6 months post an I still cant reach 1000 cal a day. I can only eat 4 or 5 small portions at a meal. Im still getting less then 800 a day. some days I eat some days no appetite. crazy..the days with no appetite I end up drinking Protein Shots to get that in. I keep my carb count under 40..I dont eat rice, potatoes, bread, or Pasta any of that anymore an no lettuce...to me its a waste to eat lettuce an no nutritional value..I eat Protein first. snack on green grapes here an there. veggies the only veggies I have nibbled on is cooked brocoli an some baby carrots cooked. we'r all differant. all protcols differant. That's why it's important to get both your protein AND fluids in. Exceptions to this would be people who do lots of weigh lifting. They can tolerate higher levels of protein because they burn it off through exercise. Most programs just generalize and round up to 60gms.
BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted January 17, 2015 .... no lettuce...to me its a waste to eat lettuce an no nutritional value..I eat Protein first. snack on green grapes here an there. veggies the only veggies I have nibbled on is cooked brocoli an some baby carrots cooked. we'r all differant. all protcols differant. Iceburg lettuce has virtually no nutritional value, however dark, leafy greens such romaine, spinach, baby greens, etc... do indeed have nutritional value. They provide Fiber, folate, beta carotine, Calcium and a host of other nutrients, including a small amount of protein.
